Did I break my 980ti?

Put me off w/c for another year and future build.

This happened to me with a 580. Even though I've been tinkering with rigs for the best part of 20 years, I still buy cards with the blocks pre fitted from ocuk. It's very easy to bend a cap over and break the solder while you are trying to get the original cooler off. Some are easier to get off than others.

Sorry to hear about this disaster. What a nightmare.

It only bloody works!! How lucky am I! :D:D:D:D:D

Just ripped my old water cooled 7970 out and popped the stock cooler back on the 980ti, plugged it in and NOTHING! hung at the mobo flash screen with an error code on the UD5 digital display. Looked it up, people suggested updating the bios to the new GFX cards. Did that and hey presto! Just played GTA5 for 10 mins to try it out and no problems at all!! Thanks for all the help guys!

For those who are saying about no putting blocks on yourself etc. I have been doing it for over 10 years now, even back in the days when it was 'a stupid things to do' and I have never had a problem. Just take your time and its well worth the hassle for having a near silent PC. The only reason this was messed up becasue I received it with a stripped screw head and didn't return it. IF I buy anything else from OC I will definitely check all is OK before I do anything, we all learn and this time I got lucky, really lucky! Hopefully the bit I knocked/broke (it definitely moved through 45 degrees!) has something to do with SLI or some feature I'm never going to use!!

Again thanks for all the help guys!

On a side note, I have this mobo Gigabyte Z77X UD5, and 3770k and a 7970 ready to sell soon, best on ebay or somewhere else?

I would still get it fixed professionally, especially if you are intending to sell the card on later.

This.

The component is most likely for reducing noise/ripple on some voltage line. Ripple on voltage lines could reduce the life of components over time.
