Did I do the right thing?

My neighbours who moved in a couple of months ago recently got 2 small puppies, I'm fairly positive.

This weekend they put up a generic shed at the bottom of the garden, I heard someone say the other day "You'll be fine, there is no way they will chew through that."

Exactly like this but without windows. (I can't see the side with the door so I'm not sure if they have modded it for ventilation but I still think this is ridiculous.)

My mum and dad have also said they have heard them shouting at the dogs and have heard a yelp once or twice.

Last night was the first time they put the puppies in the shed around 10pm, this morning I got up about 7am to let my dog out and heard them moving around in the shed.

I checked back at 9:30am and the washing is on their line and it looks like they have both gone to work and the dogs are still in the shed barking, not constantly only a couple of times but it has changed to yelping/whining which is a sign of distress imo.

I have just reported them to the RSPCA but now I'm wondering if I should have gone around to speak to the owner first and try gain some feedback and possibly offer some advice.

My parents are away on holiday atm but my Mum will not stand for this I can assure you, she will explode as soon as she is back, World War 3 inc for sure.

While my Mum has a heart of gold, she sometimes will not think about every angle.

So did I do the right thing? I'm an animal lover at heart and feel uncomfortable myself even going into the backyard for a smoke now knowing these puppies are in a shed and unattended, the last thing I want to do is of made the wrong decision and ruined someones life as this stays on file right?

I can't stand people that get puppies and can't deal with them chewing and don't have the knowledge or desire to seek other methods to combat the problems.

We have one of these sheds as well and in the summer they are like an oven...

I would have said speak to the owners first, but if the dogs are in the shed and there at work all day I can see why that would be a bit late.
so i suppose you did the right thing

Definitely did the right thing. It would make me rage if I knew that someone was obviously mistreating animals.

I should have spoken to the owners I guess but they have never been welcoming since they moved in and are very strange, both are undertakers and deal with death everyday! :D

I find them very cold and a little uneasy to be around.

Unfortunately (i know from experience), this can cause a massive blowback from the neighbors against you, which can really escalate if they're crazy. Also they'll just get more dogs / animals to mistreat.

However yes, you did the right thing.

I would have spoken to the owners first... But that's irrelevant now.

If i were doing something that may or may not be questionable, as you say you have no evidence at all, and a nosey neighbour reported me to the police/RSPCA i would think you are a nut job.

Start of a Beautiful friendship right there.

Well I think they know our feelings, before my Mum left on holiday, I made the mistake of telling her what I heard at the weekend and she flew off the handle while they were in the garden and was slamming the door and shouting bla bla disgusting, reporting these people to the RSPCA, like I said my Mum has a heart of gold and wouldn't harm a fly but she doesn't know how to chill / calm down and think things through, she is very highly strung 24/7. :3

I'll pop around this afternoon and have a chat, kinda wanna sort this before my Mum gets back because its gonna kick off and aside from that I can't deal with the stress atm coming out of hospital recently following an op.

Well done OP. I would have perhaps popped round to have a chat first, but I see no harm in phoning the RSPCA. Better that than let the animals suffer.

I'm not sure I'd go and chat with them after I'd called the RSPCA, especially if, as you mentioned, your neighbours are a bit odd and might well not be too happy with you.

I think you did the right thing. The kind of person who would shove puppies in a hot shed is also the type of person to tell you to do one if you were to question what they were doing. If they have modified the shed to give them plenty of air and it's nice and cold, they obviously care more about the animals then you think, and you can apologise later.
