Had a phone call from someone trying to offer me a monthly scheme where for a fee they would do everything from groupon to currys etc and buy the stock at trade prices so saving me hundreds of pounds potentially.

Sounds good and the first month was a free trial. They wanted a sort code to determine if I had a valid bank account. I gave them that as everyone in the local area who is with that bank will have the same sort code. it was a free trial. They had my name and address already from somewhere.

Then they asked for my account number. At this point I refused and essentially hung up.

Is this a new scam and did I do the right thing?

Essentially they kept me on the line as knew my number, address and full name so was wondering where they would get that from..... seems to be happening more and more nowadays.

There are people in this world who are sweet and honest ...... naive even and you sound like you fit in there somewhere.... right in the middle. If anyone approaches you with an offer and then wants your bank details then it's PROBABLY a scam. By PROBABLY I mean DEFINATELY in this case, whatever this 'offer' is you really should be deafened by alarm bell ringing in your ears for the next few days - don't worry the deafness will go away as soon as you say 'NO THANKYOU' and put the phone down.

To sum up - you DID THE RIGHT THING

Thanks - I guess I'm just more trusting than most as I have forced myself to trust and take chances. Sounds like too much....

They knew my address, name and now they know my sort code which is a local one to the bank anyway for the town so not that much of an issue I was thinking.

It's just happened a lot more than it normally does, normally from charities as said.

Curiosity befalls me I guess. Apologies for being stupid. :P lol
