Junction in Question:

junctempt.jpg

Basically the lights on this junction are set up as if it were a crossroads, even though the right and left roads don't exactly line up.

Imagine I'm coming up from the bottom of the picture, in the right hand lane, indicating to turn right. The lights are green. Ahead there is a chap in a blue car sitting in the middle of the junction waiting for a chance to turn onto the left hand road, but cant yet as the inside lane of the road coming from the bottom has traffic. Fair enough, he's supposed to wait there for his chance to go.

So as I'm rolling up to the junction I notice that the road I want to turn right into is a bloody fair bit behind the car waiting in the middle of junction, this isn't normally the case at a crossroads, its usually directly to its left. The road looked clear enough behind Mr blue car chap, so not knowing what else to do, I just done this:

PS: I've just noticed I've decided to draw myself in a hot pink car. Take what you will from that. :D

...which to my surprise, got me beeped at by the chap in the yellowy green car, even though there was loads of room, probably as for a second or two I was driving at him in his lane. The chap in the blue car also decided I was being a suitably useless driver and felt the need to flip me the finger. To be fair, when doing the turn it "felt" odd, like that sort of sinking feeling you get when you look behind you in your mirror and notice that the light you went though is actually red.

Though thinking over it, I can't really see any other way about it I could have taken. I could hardly have approached the junction indicating to turn right, and then stop BEHIND Mr Blue Car, as if the lane to my left had emptied, he's going to take his turn, and not expect me, turning right, to try and drive past him. Could have ran into him or had him run into me.

I'm rambling. Basically OCUK, was I in the wrong?

Were the lanes that you were both in right turn only? If so.. i guess he could have moved further into your lane for his turn?

Dont know tbh :/

Looks like the blue car should have waited abit further back to let you go infront but the other option is, you flash him to go so you could get through...if thats not viable and there are lots of cars in the left lane then yes you could have done what you did (if you were 100% there were no cars in the oppsite lane) althoguh you run the risk of making Mr Yellow Car beep abit at you :p

Nah, that's the thing, they're for going straight on or right, so you can't sit diagonally across the other lane. If you could then that junction would make a whole lot more sense.

The inside lanes on the top and bottom roads are bus lanes too until about 100m before the junction, so its normal for the outside lanes to be carrying the traffic.

I'd have carried on until alongside the blue car and turned behind him - that's usually the best way to do it as it gives you a clear view of the traffic behind him as well.

yep you should have gone behind the other car judging by the angles of the junctions. would have given you much better visibility

Technically speaking you should have gone behind him in the absence of any other road markings since the "default" way of doing right turns like that is offside to offside in the highway code.

In reality no-one ever does, so as far as I'm concerned, you were able to turn right and he wasn't able to go anywhere so just make your turn using whatever space is available. No-one would have batted an eyelid around here though I'm not sure I'd like to try it in more pedantic parts of the country.

Pulling out in front of the yellow car probably wasn't the best of ideas, however that depends on the distances involved.

But I I done that, imagine that the lane to my left is clear, Mr Blue Car is going to see me indicating right, and make his turn, he's not going to expect me to try and make my turn behind him, so it could end up with him pulling in front of me.

if that happened and I hit him, surely I'd be in the wrong?

No, just because someone is indicating right doesn't mean they ARE going to turn right. You should always wait until a car is committed to a turn before pulling out.
