Did I get a good chip then?

So my first foray into overclocking and the results are for my 4690K

4.5Ghz @ 1.200v = Stable

4.6Ghz BSOD'ed it loading windows. As it is my first OC I'm not going to go any higher on the voltage. Temps are good. so 4.5Ghz at 1.2v it is.

Just wondering how this CPU compares to others in the silicon lottery?

I would say that's quite a good chip you've got there! for reference my i7 4790k does 4.6 at 1.240, for 24/7 use I would still go a little higher on the voltage as long as you have a capable cooler and power supply. Keep it below 1.3 and at max 1.275 at that volts you MIGHT get a stable 4.7 if not drop it down to say 1.225 and try 4.6 add little increments each time it fails. Good luck :)

My cooler is a budget one (Arctic cooler 13 Pro) and although I am very impressed with it I am happy where I am with my temps. low 70's max in stress and gaming. But I suspect in Summer that might be nearer 80. Don't want to push it any further. I think 4.5Ghz is a good result from an outlay of a £20 cooler.

I would be tempted to agree Mister Beany sir,

You have a nice overclock, low ish voltage and a bit of a thermal shield for when heatsinks get dirty/summer weather etc.

Well Played :)

That's less than the stock voltage for most 4790k's, so I'd say you could push a little more without fear.

Damn. God a BSOD just there. Was in game for a few hours, on skype and pulled up 20 chrome tabs. First BSOD I had at 4.5Ghz. I have put it up to 1.21v to try and stabalise but thats as high as I am going. My cooler is budget and Im up near 80 degrees now under stress. In summer I may have to back down to 4.4 @1.20. But I'm still very happy.

Mine used to do 4.6 @ 1.25v so yours is doing pretty good!

Stress test is nothing like you'll be using your pc so I wouldn't bother about being that high. Most intel coolers run at that anyway!

I was using Aida.
at 1.21v now I'm getting 74 degrees max after hours of gaming and using skype and chrome and teamspeak. (all at the same time)

It happens...have you thought about running an offset on the core? Or simpy increase the vCore by a notch or 2.

I have had my i7 3770K running for years at 4.4hz with a max voltage of 1.2v under stress tests (its set with an offset so that it goes up and down as required), I had it running faster with very slightly more volts but as I couldnt be bothered keeping the dust away 24/7 (and summer heat) I just took the easier road and lowered the overclock back to 4.4 as higher is not really required anyway, not for me, was nice to see the mega high overclocks though :)
