Did I get away with it?

Ordered £500 item from the usa.. Shipped via fedex.

Obviously should pay import tax.. The tracking says its out for delivery today, so passed through the UK sorting office.

?

FedEx will have just done pre arrival clearance and picked up the cost themselves.

They will invoice you seperately after the fact.

I've had an invoice for customs charges after delivery as well.
Good thing about that is you can take your time paying it as you've already got your goods.

I guess it saves them holding thousands of parcels while customs charges etc are sent out and paid.

I bought an Akubra Hat & Belt from Australia and was told there's a customs charge when it was delivered. I asked how I pay that and the postie just shrugged and said "Dunno". I signed and he walked off.

That was about 10 years ago and I aint heard anything yet !

Yup, depending on the value/prior history with them, they'll deliver the item and then send you the bill for the various costs, including their service charge for paying on your behalf.

FedEx will be an invoice mate. Last time it happened to me no indication on their box, but I received a letter a few weeks later. You may get lucky, but FedEx are on the ball IME.
