i was really torn over whether to go over to pci-e.

my current system is in sig. i could'nt decide whther to get the new gainward card on agp ( which would have set me back 350 notes ) , or just change my system .

as i was using a 3700 processor on socket 754 i was at the limt of what i could do.

eventually decided to get :-

Sapphire ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-121-SP)
Price: £159.95 (£187.94 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Asus K8N4-E Deluxe nForce4 4X (Socket 754) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-113-AS)
Price: £49.95 (£58.69 Including VAT at 17.5%)

and more ram

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS3 (GE2GB3200BDC) (MY-046-GL)
Price: £101.95 (£119.79 Including VAT at 17.5%)

have i done the right thing ??? everything except the ram arrives tommorow :)

Trust me, you will not be disappointed at all. I made the move to PCI-E in October when I bought my GTO², and it's better because you simply have much bigger range of hardware to look at when upgrading.

I also bought a 256MB X1800XT and upgraded to 2GB RAM on Tuesday, a huge improvement over the GTO² and 1GB RAM I had before. Again, you will not regret it one bit, and your machine will fly in anything you throw at it. :D

!!! My mate has the exact same mobo and gfx card as you and has had no end of probs.

He has asked me to warn you of the problems that could well be ahead of you.

He knows his stuff, so he isn't a newbie who didnt set it up properly, but he's had games crashing on him and other nasties.

Apparently its a known issue that there is some functionality "missed-off" the board for smooth compatibility between the card and mobo.

Check out the Rage3D forums for info backing this up.

Hope this helps, but he's just changed to a 7900GT and no probs now :)

Not a bad little rig at all now. They'll be few games you can't max at 1280x1024. Looks like you made a fairly cost efficient set of choices too. Well done.
Hmm, I dunno. I play all my games at 1280x960 (preference, monitor goes up to 1600x1200) and I've not played one I couldn't max at that resolution yet. This includes Oblivion with HDR+AA. I imagine Quake IV or Call Of Duty 2 would give me a bit of hassle since their highest settings are optimised for 512MB video memory, but I play Half Life 2, Counter Strike Source, Battlefield 2 + Special Forces, Guild Wars, Oblivion, and they all run totally maxed just fine.

wont have a chance to read forums as i'm working ... but i hope his was just a problem i don't have.

can't see why overclockers would sell a product that was known to cause problems with certain combinations of cards.

especially as the mobo was recommend to me when i spoke on the phone to them this morning :(
