Did I use the wrong drive format?

I got my X99 build up and running last night. When it came to installing Windows 8.1, I had just the SM951 plugged in and installed to it with no problems. When Windows gave the opportunity to choose the drive format, I went with MBR by reflex, instead of GPT.

Should I have used GPT and is there any way other than a full reinstall to switch to GPT?

Will it affect my drive's performance?

If it doesn't affect my performance, then I probably wont worry about it.

I panicked about not using a GPT partition.

a. I have no drives over 2TB
b. I benched my system and it doesn't affect performance at all.

If I'd been sensible, I'd have installed Windows etc using drives set up as GPT. In the future if I want drives over 2TB, I will need to initialise the drive as GPT. Unless I suddenly have a need for mass storage, I'm not going to need GPT.

You only need to initialise the drive that is over 2TB as GPT... to use the extra space. The primary OS drive - SSD or whatever - if under 2TB, doesn't need to be GPT to access other GPT disks :)

Thanks crinkleshoes, a nice clear, concise explanation!

I don't plan on having any massive HDDs soon, between a 512GB SSD dedicated to games and a 1TB storage drive I'm sorted!
