Did I use too much thermal paste?

I've been doing a bit of OC'ing and am getting feedback that my system is a bit hot for having a Tuniq Tower and 8 Case fan setup - the room is a bit nippy also.

It's been suggested that the Tuniq isn't flush on the CPU, that I need to sand down the Tuniq block and use AS Thermal paste (is that Akasa Silver Thermal by any chance?).

When I applied the paste that came with the Tuniq I basically smothered the whole cpu in a layer as thin as I could but pretty liberally, but a posted says that it is recomended just to apply a slither doen the middle and twist the cooler while seating it.

So did I use too much, is the stuff that come with the Tuniq not that good and should I try again using the thin slither and twist approach.

I noticed on the stock cooler there is a thin strip on the bottom and I'm guessing it's some kind of thermal stuff and I definately used much more than that, have I ballsed up?

An how do i clean the CPU to try again if that's what is needed and what do I use to sand the block?

Many thanks 1DMF.

thanks guys from the application diagram - oh ****, I used WAY to much.

Looks like I got a nasty cleaning job and re-application on my hands, oh well you live and learn.

again thanks , your input is appreciated.

oops sorry :)

Well I went down town and got some Akasa Citric cleaning fluid and some Arctic Silver Formula 5, plus some metal sanding paper!

Cleaned both CPU & Tuniq, sanded down Tuniq till it was as smooth as a babies bottom!

Applied a slither as per the diagram and gave it a little twist when seated.

however nothing has changed, my temps are exactly the same?

So I ran a few tests last night and found It was no longer stable @ 3.5ghz , the temps didn't seem to go any higher, but Orthos kept failing within 3 mins.

OK my ambient temps was @ 5c higher in the room as the central heating was still on , would that make so much of a difference?, I thought maybe the ram was wimping out on me as I have no direct coling, but Orthos failed on CPU only stress test (it also failed ram only as well as blend)

So I decided to hit a happy medium 3.33ghz CPU and 1000mhz memory and tested last night, it runs Orthos fine yet my temps were @ the same as when I had it on 3.5ghz and 1050mhz memory (53/55c).

I've tested this morning with much cooler ambient as no heating is on and Orthos ran fine, I left it 45 mins on Blend and my temperature never went over 50c it was basically 47/50c so i guess ambient temps can make a major difference.

I've decided 3.33ghz and 1000mhz ram stable in both warm and cold room teperatures is a happy compromise, though I don't seem to get as good a clock as I was hoping or as good as those with E6300-E6600, do the E6700's run hotter than the lower end chips?

oh well enough of me messing about with this beast, time to actually use it, just been down GAME and spent my christmas vouchers, so game on! :D

oh one thing I have managed to do though running just that litte bit slower is tighten memory timings, im now CAS4-4-4-8 @ 1000mhz (500fsb) , not bad really for PC6400 at the end of the day, but then again they weren't cheap!

here's my final screen shot....
