So yea, did some DIY.

What I actually did was the worlds most simple job - replace OEM Tape Player with the OEM CD Player with Multi Info display. In any other car this is a 5 minute job which requires you to.... remove the tape player and fit the CD player.

But no, this is not the BMW way.

The old radio/cassette unit which was shockingly fitted as standard on £34,000 cars as recently as 2003 (Ok, it has a changer as well but thats still not acceptable) is a single peice unit. Oddly, it's also rather sought after on Ebay - they sell for, wait for it, £200+ if its the later model fitted to the facelift cars.

The CD unit is not a single peice unit - it is a CD drive with a seperate multi info display. It's a far better unit than the tape player and crucially has a much larger screen. This means it works well with mp3 solutions displaying text on the screen etc.

The two units are seperate and are linked by cable. But no, not in the ordinary fashion. Infact the cable from the display actually wires into the cars main loom where the ECU is, and then a further two cables are properly wired into the cars main fuse box. From here, it then works the CD player using cabling which is already present in the car. So I to get it to work, all this had to be wired in. Then the entire bluetooth phone control unit needed moving to make space for the multi info display in the dashboard.

I guess this is when why peoples radios break they pay £9000000 for another tape player rather than go the CD route :D

Still, I think it was worth it - looks a tad better, still fits in the dashboard, and I'm happy with it. I've also got an OEM BMW MP3 Changer in the boot as well so I've got 600 tracks in the car whilst still looking completely OEM, and a Sony Sound on Top amplifier behind the glovebox to improve sound.

Edit: Just noticed, since your car is an M3 (or M5??) shouldn't the gear box have an extra gear, gear 6?

No, my car is a 530i Sport hence 5 speed gearbox.

what does the 'MAX' button do on the climate?

With the car running, it runs the aircon on max blower at 16c to cool the car. With the car turned off, it re-engages the heater and allows it to keep the car warm whilst the engine is off, for example if you pop into a shop or are waiting to pick someone up.

It's an amplifier which plugs into the cars existing audio loom allowing you to improve the sound quality without changing the head unit, speakers etc.

I very much fancy the 16:9 screen but it's absolutely ridiculously expensive - you need a screen at 300 quid, a nav computer at 300 quid, a radio module at 300 quid, a loom at 100 quid, various fittings at 100 quid and you also need to retrofit the high onboard computer inc new instruement cluster if you want the satnav to display date/time as well.

Which is just weird becuase if you've got a VW/Audi you can buy the nav units for 400 quid all in

The BMW system is not really any better than any other manufacturers system - it isnt touch screen and the tech behind it dates from 2000. You just seem to need to pay the same for each section of it as you do for the entire Audi system. It makes no sense at all.

Console looks a bit bland now but its a 6 year old car now. It certainly feels completely solid and very well built to touch which is what matters to me :)

This thread would have been a good thread had you given a sort of guide i.e. why it was more difficult than it appears and how you had overcome the challenge. It would then be of use to other BMW owners. Instead you fail Fox, you fail to deliver.

I explained why, becuase you need to wire the display into the cars ECU and fuse box. I overcame the problem by... wiring the display into the cars ECU and fuse box.
