after finding out my i7 860 seems to be dead i am debating whether to keep looking for an improved processor or possibly try to sell my system before wednesday when my new itx case arrives and fund a newer socket build to whack inside it.

however i am wondering whether my i3 or any other 1156 cpu can be overclocked without being a specific? just like the 775 socket where you could pretty much overclock any without all this 'K' requirement, if i can then i could get a new cooler.

Yes, AFAIK you can overclock LGA 1156 chips using BCLK overclocking. It's more similar to X58 (LGA 1366) overclocking though, not LGA 775 overclocking.

ypou can get a 4 core 8 thread xeon for £20 off ebay thats the same as your i7 pretty much :)

thanks for replies.

never dealt 1366 so dont think of them, so 775 only socket i know and have done overclocking on myself lol.

i am still unsure on the xenons as i have less knowledge of them than the other processors lol as while ive implied so so gaming with this build, waiting for my elite 110 which will allow my atx supernova and than dual slot cards of good value can be added, so will want to make make this a decent mid ranger gamer.

the xeon x3450 is 2.66ghz stock and has 4c8t and should oc to 3.8-4ghz with is 1ghz faster than your i7 860 was. they are about £20 as well.

you could sell your current setup and get an itx am4 system with a ryzen 5 1400 or 1600. but newer versions are coming out soon. Maybe buy the xeon and keep it until the new ryzen chips come out?

maybe i will look into the xenons, always up for trying different parts, ironically when i returned my 860 to said shop they had a 920 i think for £25, but obviously that was 1366 lol.

i have seen a 1155 itx mobo combo which has Asus P8H61-I R2.0, i5 3470, 8gb ram, intel cooler on gum which would be ideal upgrade without going recent tech, but its £100, i still need a gpu to replace my 610.
