Fossett was reported missing on September 3, 2007 after the plane he was flying over the Nevada desert failed to return.[2] Despite over a month of searches by the Civil Air Patrol and others, Fossett has not been located, and the search by CAP was called off on October 2, 2007. However, privately funded and directed search efforts continue. On November 26, 2007, Fossett's wife requested that Fossett be declared legally dead.[3]

That's quite a long time to be searching. I doubt they'd search for more than a week or two had it been a normal member of the public.

To be honest, it's what he's been doing all his life, he might have even considered to be lost in the desert/sea a "proper" funeral. Cerainly more approprate for him than you or I, I suppose.
