One of the rear shocks on my nissan sunny 1.4 is leaking so needs replacing. Guy in the garage said i should do both at the same time which is fair enough but then said it would be £430 each! Yoiks! Really?

Just sounds an awful lot to me. What im planning to do is find some cheap ones from a breakers yard then get a small garage down the road to fit them.

Some used/knackered shocks from a breakers. Nice one ;)

How about buy some new shocks and springs, then get those fitted.

Would imagine them to be £60 a shock and £40 a spring, so £100 a corner, £200+labour.

Think your mechanics wearing his Halloween mask early, ask him if he really is a guising ****

I wouldnt pay that, after doing shocks and springs myself i know its not rocket science

ah ok i assumed the hardware would be the expensive bit :) I dont have a single problem getting bit from yards though.

I'll phone round a few garages for quotes then :)

Try calling local Auto factors, fair enough each car parts going to cost different, but for front struts my fiesta was around 80quid just for the parts,

Im sure its no where near what they are quoting unless your suspension is built liek the terminators armpit

Christ, even looking on the bay only parts I could see were Tein and unless its some uber crazy set up you wont need Coilovers

I'd only replace the shock on that side, the other is probably fine and if we're getting into preventative maintenance why aren't you refreshing the entire suspension system?

Also £50 labour is plenty, source a part yourself and shop around.

well i just got a pair for £65 warrantied off FindAPart so thats that sorted. Just need to find a grease monkey to put them on now :) It was no doubt expensive as it was one of these "chain" garages rather than a small private owned one, i honestly havnt seen a single small garage in Chelmsford anywhere which is suprising.

As an aside to the whole second hand parts thing, 3 years ago the starter motor went, Nissan wanted well over £100 for a new one! Got one from a breakers for £15 and someone fitted it for 20. Been fine for 3 years. Some of us are skint and just have to make do.

Try looking in the yellow pages, they're usually hidden.

You not know anyone that can do it for you?

I used to do work for people but getting to the stage people just gwet on my nerves, Last thing I did was a set of new Disks and pads, all I heard for the week after was how they didnt feel right, No matter how much I said they need to bed in they wouldnt listen.

2 other people drove the car and agreed with me.

Yeah some of us in here aint in the 30k+ lifestyles so cant always pay mega bucks for things

Why do the springs need doing?

It should take less than one hour to do both, say he's charging you £100 per shock, and charges £100/hr labour, then a very expensive quote is £300 for the lot.

I bet you can have it done for £200 somewhere, for both sides.

A guy I used to kick about with took his rover 200 to get lowered and all the guy was doing was changing the springs, he got it done for £150 and garage aint back street and isnt a big one so price seamed to be ok, and I would say its about the same amount of work involved going on the suspension changes ive done

Exactly, I've replaced both front shocks on a Panda with Dad, it was a complete breeze, done in 30 minutes, longest part of the job was winding the spring compressors in.

Seeing as the Sunny has been out of production for some years, there aren't going to be many low mileage examples to take parts off. Hence the parts are likely to be past their best if not worn out. And old struts are usually crusty and nasty. I don't know what the going rate for 2nd hand dampers is, but the saving over new parts can't be that much.

You don't want second hand dampers, unless they're incredibly new. It's immensely hard to catch a sideways mishap with knackered rear shocks.
