benchmarking crysis side by side with an 8 series SLI and a 7950GX2 with the same settings and resolution... and the image quality difference IS actually noticeable... the texture filtering is actually noticeably sharper and clearer on the 8 series card - not just in a static screenshot and the tone balance (HDR) seems better too - richer and less washed out.

OK not a major revelation ;) and a few months late but I honestly didn't think it would be noticeably different except in comparing static screenshots.

I've not sat them down side by side on the same displays, same settings, etc. before (aside from oblivion but there were some differences between the 2 setups) and I didn't think the differences would actually be noticeable in realtime :P

A few months late? Probably about a year or more as the differences were apparent in games from the time the 8800 came out. :p

Heh... I know its no revelation... but I've sat 6 and 7 series cards down before side by side with the x800 and x1900 series and for all the claims about image quality... theres been no real differences in real time and only marginal when comparing static screenshots... so to see such a difference in realtime between 7 and 8 series was shocking... I've used 8 series plenty of times and not thought "wow this looks so much better than my 7950GX2" but sitting the 2 cards side by side the image does look much nicer on the 8 series...

Can't say I noticed much of a difference from a 7900gt to a 8800GTS originally. Mainly due to being so blown away with the performance boost I guess :p

Heh exactly... swap from a 7 series card to an 8 series and the performance is usually what grabs you and you don't really notice the change in image quality... but run them side by side in the same game, with the same settings on 2 of the same displays and its quite a bit different... the 7 series looks kinda "overcast" tone wise in scenes compared to the richer more vibrant tone on the 8 series and on the 8 series medium ground textures are crisper.
