Diesel engine question

I've never had a diesel before.

I now have a 2.5TD with something called a Superchip, which supposedly gives it more bhp.

Anyway, when I put my foot down - all the way - black smoke comes out the back.

Is this bad? Normal?

Do I need to do anything? Check anything?

I know nothing about engines...

Super chipping ( :rolleyes: ) can lead to an increase in smoking out of the back on a diesel.

How many miles has it done and is it a VAG lump!?

Even with a chip, you should only be able to see a 'haze' on a semi modern diesel engine, and even then it should only be at night time and viewable in front of a cars headlights in your rear view mirror.

Any other time, you should not see plumes of black smoke.

May I suggest the following. Change your oil and DEFINATELY change your air filter. (Clogged air filter is the biggest cause of smoke from Diesels)

i recommend millers diesel injector cleaner for diesel cars. have used it on my own (was an A4 diesel) which had a wobbly idle, which i presumed was due to a dirty injector. ran that through and it was fine after

I agree, a double dose of millers and a fast thrash up the motorway can really lower the emissions on a diesel.
As already said, Clean air filter and oil also works wonders.
 
I don't know how to change the oil, let alone the oil filter (don't even know what to look for!) :o.

The car was last serviced in September 05. The oil should be ok no?

Where would I find this Millers gear? Halfords?

Oil should be ok provided its changed on or before the service interval. If you mainly drive round town reduced the service interval.
The air filter might not have been changed on the service, quite often they don't bother blowing them out with an airline either.
The stuff you want is Millers Diesel Power Plus, you should have a look at your local motor shop. My local car shop sell it well under the RRP.
 
May also be due to a build up of carbon in the exhaust system. Give it an occasional red-line to help reduce this ;)

Used to work a treat in my Passat (140k miles), as it was usually driven around 2k-2.5k rpm, so the odd limiter bounce probably didn't do too much harm.

The harder you thrash a diesel, the longer it'll run between services, the gentler you drive it, the more carbon builds up.

Give it death. :p

Indeed at work every few months we run the diesel generators on 110% load to get rid of the carbon deposits, so a reason to give your car a good thrash :)
 
They didn't have the Millers stuff, so I bought some other one called Diesel Magic. (Following the directions) I added the whole bottle to the fuel tank. Is this the same kind of stuff?

Yes.

Just like Redex really.

Put it in as low a tank as possible, fill up on top of it. Job Done

But I would still really really think about getting the airfilter changed.

This is THE most common cause of smoke and high fuel consumption from a Diesel engine. They cost about £20 (no more) from a decent motor factors (or even maybe a dealer).

Changing it will increase low down torque and help with fuel consumption as well as a cleaner diesel.

Leaving it dirty for a long period of time will result in a dead MAF which you really dont want. (£700 for a new one!)
 
Smoke from diesels is caused by poor combustion when you put your foot down. Because of the longer carbon chains, you end up producing soot when you put your foot all the way down, and that's what comes out of the exhaust. Bit of a waste really...

Had a friend with a Focus though, which was pumping out tonnes of smoke at all engine speeds. Way more than my 306 1.9DTurbo S.
 
ive not known many people to have good results with other fuel additives, the Millers stuff really does work, they are an awesome brand

good luck with it tho
