Following up on my previous thread where i was linked to http://www.fatlosstips.com/ to get some starting ideas...could someone answer a couple of questions?

Suggested diet:

8 am Whey protein powder, vitamin C (1,000mg)
9 am Workout
10:30 am Meal [egg white omlette] with Glutamine, and vitamin C
1:30 pm Meal 3 [5oz chicken breast, 1 cup of brown rice, small salad]
4:30 pm Meal 4 [snack]
7:30 pm Meal 5 [6oz of tuna, 1 cup of vegetables]
10:30 pm Whey protein powder, vitamin C and Glutamine

Now, whey protein powder. What is it and what do you do with it (apart from eat it!). Do you just mix it up with something and drink it? Can you buy it in supermarkets or specialist shops only?

Where it says vitamin C - does that mean it has vit C in it or to take 1000mg of vit c (in tablets or food)?

Glutamine - same as above questions really?

What would you suggest makes a good snack?

Thanks all.

You can buy Whey Protein from myprotein.co.uk (Use code MP24681 for 5% off your first order!) - unfortunately the prices are a little high at the moment, but hey. It's taken in shakes, I generally mix 50g Whey, 50g Oats with water for my post workout shake for example. Vitamin C is generally a good supplement, but I'd look into getting yourself a decent multivitamin instead. ADAMS Multivit comes highly recommended around these parts and is also available from myprotein. Be careful with your tuna intake, it contains small amounts of mercury and it's recommended you restrict intake to about 3 cans a week. For a snack, I like peanuts or peanuts butter on wholemeal bread/toast, they have essential fatty acids in them too. Generally though, avoid simple carbs.

Fundamentally, what are you looking to achieve? Fat loss, or muscle gain? Pick one! :)

For now...i choose fat loss. I'm back on my bike and ready to roll. I have the summer holidays off soon, or most of them, due to work so want to put in as much time and effort in to losing weight as i can. When i return to work i want people to notice!

Thanks for the links and the discount code! Will go and have a look at the site and order some bits.

I'm not looking to build big muscles, not yet anyway, i wanna lose weight..but at the same time i don't wanna lose what muscle i currenlty have. Do you think the above suggested diet looks ok? I would have to vary the times initially as i'm still at work. I was actually thinking that i would cycle to work each day instead of the morning workout that diet suggests, but then having the regular, smaller meals throughout the day.

By simple carbs...do you mean things like bread and pasta? I'm new to this so must ask.

Is having those whey and oats so late in the evening a good idea?

Edit: from that site, which whey protein am i after..there are quite a few? Just the unflavoured one?

The only thing I would say is the diet looks a little thin. How many calories is that? Multiply your bodyweight in lbs by 12 to give you you're RMR (resting metabolic rate, i.e. the number of cals required by your body when doing nothing). That's a good starting figure to go on calories wise. A good way to maintain muscle mass is to take whey protein and undergo a weights and cardio regime. Weights 3 days a week, cardio inbetween. Good call on cycling to work.

Edit - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17708722 - this thread might give you a better idea of how to best calculate your daily cal intake.

So, i need to get me some oats:
http://www.myprotein.co.uk/bulk-powders/carbohydrates/ultra-fine-scottish-oats/

and some whey protein:
http://www.myprotein.co.uk/bulk-supplies/unflavoured-whey/5lb-impact-whey-protein-(unflavoured)/
or
http://www.myprotein.co.uk/bulk-powders/protein-powders/hydrolysed-whey-protein/
or
http://www.myprotein.co.uk/bulk-powders/protein-powders/impact-whey-isolate/

Not sure of the difference.

Mix 50g of each in to water to make it in to a mushy drink? Twice a day. One before my bike ride, one before bed.

That sound good?

Even though you say you want to lose weight, and people up orotein and cut carbs while doing this I think you have really neglected your carbs. Theres not much there in terms of carbs. If your worried about carbs i think it might be a good idea if you do some carb cycling.

Buy oats from Tesco and blend them, they're about 50p a kilo.

On the homepage go to the pricematcher at the bottom and type in www.bulkpowders.co.uk and you can get '5kg of Whey Protein Concentrate 80 (EURO) [tubbed]' for £28.95

50g per shake should be ok, though I only take them pre and post workout on the days I do weights. What's your height and what do you weigh?
