Hi guys,

My new Samsung 6 series arrived today. I'm very interested in Blu-ray and a PS3 seems to be the most logical route for this. I have a 360 at current so and not clued up on the PS3 at all.

There were 40 and 60GB versions. These are now discontinued to make way for the relase of the 80GB on August 27th? (Correct me if im wrong). The Previous 2 UK models did not have backwards compatibility for PS2 games.

As far as I have read the only difference between the current 40GB and soon to be 80GB apart from extra HDD space is what exactly? more USB ports? improved hardware? Will it come with SIXAXIS (non rumble?) or DUALSHOCK SIXAXIS (which does rumble)controller?

I'm trying to figure out wether it is worth waiting 3-4 weeks or so you see!

Anything else i need to know please say!

Regards

Benny C

As far as I'm aware it's just the extra HDD space. I think it was only the MGS4 bundled packs which had the DS3 in the US so it could be the same over here!!!

Thats good, because im likely to get the MGS4 bundle, with the strategy guide and I am Legend on Blu-Ray from a competitor for around £335, just wondered what i'd be getting, and if i'd be kicking myself for not waiting 3 weeks!

From what I hear the HDD is just a 2.5" Laptop HDD which can be changed easily?

Also could anybody tell me what format video files the PS3 will play?

The next big firmware update will probably enable software emulation of PS2 games, well this is what I think might happen as they have completely phased out BC models now I think, no news of the new 80 having BC at least.

USB 2.0 ports: 2
802.11 b/g Wi-Fi: Yes
Flash card readers: No
Chrome trim: Yes
SACD support[50]: No
PS2 compatibility: No

Apparently that's the same for both the 40g and 80g models over here. The old 60g was yes to everything though AND had 4 USB ports.

EDIT: Oh, and according to that, they come with DS3's now.

Which disks would you recommend? for around £50, I assume they're SATA drives?

You could grab a 250gb 5400rpm SATA drive for around that amount (can put 7200rpm in if you want but some complain of issues (which should be resolved))

I have a 320gb WD Scorpio drive in, ~£60

I bought this one when it was on a this week only offer, and it's been perfect. I've seen a lot of people using the 320GB WD drives as well.

Any SATA 2.5" drive should work as far as I know.

Have you got a link to this? or is it just speculation?

The 80GB has been confirmed as having no PS2 backward compatibility currently. They're identical to the 40GB consoles apart from the hard drive.

No they wont be doing this yet. If at all.

The PS2 is still supported by Sony and if they were to offer BC with the PS3s, then their sales of PS2s would drop.

Sony have a 10 year plan for each console.

AFAIK the 40GB and 80GB models can never play PS2 games as they miss a hardware chip needed for backwards compatibility.

The new 80GB will come with a DualShock 3 controller, they have stopped making the SIXAXIS ones now.

Yeah but didn't have PS2 games on the PS Store at E3 or whatever?

Sony could just be saying that after all.

1. I didn't say they would.
2. You're not Sony, you don't know that.

Sony have said bc is not coming back.
On backwards compatibility: Jack explained that Sony looked at how to "not take a greater hit on production cost, without losing PlayStation's heritage ... Hardware / software for backwards compat wasn't all that expensive. ... but we're selling PS2 software to PS2 customers, and selling PS3 software to PS3 consumers." Still, Jack seems to feel like it may have been the wrong move. "I would like to have had it in there, but Sony's collective strategy determined we could afford to lose it. We've now gone down that road, and we're not going back."
