I'm a bit confused as to what the difference between the two are. As I understand, an MOT is legally required where as a service isn't, but is desired.

But even if what I said is correct, I still don't understand the difference between the two. Don't they more or less do the same checks on both Service and MOT tests?

Thanks :)

nope mot is basically a legal safety check. A service will depend on the car and millage, but will involve things like oil/spark plug changing, cam belts, checking brake pads have enough pad left on them. Things like that.

An MOT test is just that - a government test on the condition of your car. No work is carried out.

A service is a series of preventative based maintenance actions on your car. It typically involves changing the oil, often spark plugs, usually the air filter, etc etc.

They are both completely different yet it amazes me how many people think they are the same thing. If you don't service your car it will affect its reliability.

Same here. Someone at work was moaning last week because they had an MOT last week but when they checked water and oil a few days after the MOT, both needed topping up :D

i car share with a bit of a plum that drives a 320. we were talking car stuff and about when the next bits and pieces were due, i think because i was arranging an oil change on my own car.

he beleived he had done 9k miles on the current sump of oil, it was changed last summer when the mot was done

i asked him whether he was sure, he took his car in for this years mot, and sure enough, the oil was below minimum and had been in therefore at least 18k and 2 years

dont worry though, its a low mileage car

so then he had exceeded the 2 year bit by a couple months.

either way, it has to be kept above the minimum on the dipstick

i could never keep oil in a car that long, he drives it pretty hard too. the oil in the engine was like tar. the daft intervals have to be something to do with the sludged up bmw engine pics you see on the netz
