This may look a stupid question but...

Raw speed and memory aside, so for arguments sake a still image, will an AMD and nVidia card produce an identical image in-game with the same quality settings?

Pretty much. I think you'd really struggle to tell the difference if there was one side by side let alone by by itself.

Your monitor settings/calibation and quality as well as lighting conditions will make a much bigger difference.
