Hi

Can someone please explain any phsical differences between HDTVs and Monitors? I dont understand why, at the low end (up to say 26") you will pay twice the money for a HDTV than you would for the same size monitor, yet the monitor can provide much higher resolution, and better quality and specs?

Is there some physical difference in the panel design?

TV's have speakers, normally more inputs and are far far better at scaling.

From my experience anyway!

Is this really all their is too it? I figured they must have some sort of different type of panel... but maybe not.

I suppose TVs fall into a different market aswell, that seems to sustain high prices (if you can find any, you will still pay £40+ for a 14" CRT TV)

Well most newer TV's will have a panel suited to better/wider viewing angles.

The normal prices 22-24" Monitors are TN's (not as good viewing angles).

Monitors are generally much higher resolutions for a much smaller screen as you sit close to your monitor and not your TV. Normally you dont get TV's with a 1920x1080 resolution below 37" though thee are a few exceptions. Where as you get that in a monitor with a 23"+ size. Also a 30" monitor will have a resolution of 2560x1600 and a TV's biggest resolution is 1920x1080 regadless of if its a 37" or a 50".

Also as said above monitors are designed to be used in there native resolution all the time, where as TV's are designed to be used with a wide range of resolutions so they have much better image scaling. TV's generally are used with multiple souces so have plenty of inputs.

As for pannels is more towards where the TV/monitors price point is marketed to. Cheap TV/monitor will usually* use a cheaper pannel where as a 'premium(i.e. better image quality, more features, looks etc.)' tv/monitor will useually* have a better pannel. Such as Hazro 24" @ £450? (more expensive S-IPS pannel) vs Benq G2400W @ £260 (cheaper TN pannel) etc.

* there are exceptions to this though

Its the opposite really, price up any 26" or 32" TV against a 27" or 30" monitor equivelant (even a 24" is dearer in cases), monitors are dearer for the reasons stated.
