Difference between Mondeo TD and TDCi?

Mate of mine is going to look at a 2001 Mondeo. He says its a 2001 Ford Mondeo 2000 cc 2.0TD LX.

At first I thought it must be a misprint as I'd only heard of the TDCi but looking at parkers its seems to be correct. Thing is it has identical performance figures to the TDCi, so is this a different engine or did they just start to use a different naming convention? If its different is it to be avoided?

Cheers

Probably a TDCi

But you can get lesser powered versions, such as the TDDi.

I think the newer models were still called TDCi but had reduced power ratings, such as 90bhp, 115bhp etc etc

Yes.

TDCi 130bhp is the one to go for but the 115bhp isn't too shabby either.

The early mk3 Mondeo's were available with the old TD lump which whilst its a good workhourse isn't a touch on the TDCi.

Some people say that the 2.0 TDDi isnt anywhere near as good as the TDCi but I think its almost as good.

Its not that different an engine, and puts out around 115bhp quoted but more than that in reality.

We still had a TDDi up till recently as a pool car, and it was basically the same as the TDCi's we had too.

The TDDi is an ancient prewar lump that is often mistaken for a tractor engine. The TDCi is rather a good common rail diesel and worth the extra cost. Not to say the TDDi is unreliable, it's a good solid but antiquated and noisy engine.

The 2.0 TDDi is an ancient pre-war lump?

The engine is far far superior to the 1.8 TD of old... now that I can understand.

had a 2001 tddi 115 ,now got a tdci 130. cant fault the tddi, it always started, got you to your destination, appeared to give about 38 mpg on fill ups. did sound a bit noisier (similar to a 2.5 transit) tll warmed up, but was comfortable. by the way did 148,000 miles from new in my old one.

tdci, is smoother, and pulls better (but then it is a 130, with electronic variable turbo) comfort is better, but then it is a ghia as opposed to an lx.
returns around 50mpg from fill ups, only done 18000 with it yet (since retireing), but whether i got a bad one or am just unlucky ,i have made extensive use of the 3 year warranty.

would i have another tdci or the older tddi?.....despite the problemes i and it appears quite a few others have had , yes i would have another tdci, because when running correctly it is very quick and capable car. :)

i must just add in defence of the tddi, we did several trips to the west country and returned around the 50mpg mark, just sitting around the 65/70 mark. :D

The Mk3 2.0 TDDi engine isn't prewar - only been around since 2000. Its from the same PUMA range as the TDCi which are used in the Mk3 Mondeo and the commercial range. The main reason it was criticised was because the French already had common rail HDi's on the market.

In the grand scheme of things they are not too bad. They are noisier, less refined and not as economical as the TDCi. Some say the TDDi's are more reliable - they don't suffer with injectors failing to the extent the early TDCi's did.

If its cheap its probably worth a punt - they are a fairly solid chain driven engine.

So was the old 1.8TD ever available on the MK3's? I must admit it seems that I've had the wrong end of the stick with regards to the TDDi as I thought it was comparable to the old TD.

Just to clarify, the Mk3 Mondeo 2.0 TDDi uses almost exactly the same DOHC 16v engine as the TDCi, but has electro-mechanical injection rather than the common rail system of the TDCi. It's a pretty good engine, certainly not to be confused with the rattly old 1.8TD, though it doesn't return as good economy as the TDCi.

[EDIT] In fact just what blueboy2001 said really :D

I had a Focus with the old 1.8TD engine in it and it was the roughest, nastiest underpowered lump of junk I've ever had the misfortune to sit behind.

The Rover 220D I had before it was better.

When the TDCi was launched, Ford went from having one of the worst diesel engines on the market to one of the best.

I have Mondeo 2.0 TDDI and I think it's fine by me. It averaged 550 miles per tank, best I had out of tank was 617 miles.

Both TDDI and TDCI are exactly same engine but TDCI has common-rail like Dogbreath said. Both engines has identical mpg.

However, performance goes:

0-60 times - top speed

TDDI 115 - 9.8 sec - 121
TDCI 130 - 9.8 sec - 129
TDCI 115 - 10.8 sec - 122

As it shows, TDDI is not one to be messed with. ;)

Oh, TDCI is not one you would put in dodgy diesel, which is why Ford is still selling TDDI in some european countries including Ireland.

Where did those figures come from, the Ladybird Book of Mondeo Lies? :p
Not kidding but TDCI being quicker is common misconceptions.

These figures are from what car? online. I have checked the other sources to confirm that. For example, Parkers guide put 9.5 sec for TDDI and 10.5 for 115 TDCI! Also same 9.5 for 130 TDCI.

Yes, my TDDI does feel very quick if a little rough! :p

Check your data, mate! ;)
