Hey everyone,
For some strange reason I bought a Phenom 9950 a few days before the Phenom II's came out, and I'm wondering if there's that much difference? Are the II's really that much faster? They're only a bit more than the 9950 :( How annoying! Cheers, Chris.

The PII's are that much better.
They run at lower temperatures and are far more efficient power-wise. I believe AMD have also fixed the cool 'n quiet issue that the Phenom's seem to suffer from. (Disable C'nQ on your Phenom1 or suffer performance issues)
They have 6mb L3 cache which runs faster than the original Phenom's 2mb.

The PII's also overclock better than the Phenom's do, much better.
Check out some of the initial reviews of the 920/940 to see the speed increases. They are significant.

Of course, you're 9950 is still a decent CPU but you have missed out. :(

i have a 9850 and a 940, the 940 is much faster and overclocks much better and higher and as much lower temps..

my 940 idle at 30c and never goes over 49c underload, this is at 3.7ghz 1.46v, nb/ht t 2.4ghz, all on air.

Hey guys,
Who feels like kicking themselves in the head? I think I'll hold onto the 9950 for a little while, I've got it hitting 3.3GHz and it's doing me well so far. I'll upgrade soon though, my local store will happily do a part exchange for me. It's my own fault, the store asked me whether I wanted to get a II, and I said no! Dear me....Cheers for the replies, Chris.

I wouldn't beat yourself up to much about it, you could re-sell fairly quick to reclaim most of the losses, or you can stick with your plan and keep it for a while.
It's at 3.3ghz and you say it's doing you well so far, that's all that matters. As long as the CPU is good enough for what you need.

It's still a fast CPU and I wouldn't imagine you'd experience poor performance with it.

Hi,
Yeah it's performing really well, stock cooling and it still never goes about 51c, with the fan hitting just over 2000RPM. I'm happy with it :) I'll upgrade when I need/can. Cheers, Chris.

we all do stuff like that anyway, i honestly wouldnt worry too much, apparently new phenoms are out in april anyway, might be worth just waiting for them if you're really concerned about it

there's always a better processor/gfx card/whatever coming out in a few weeks time. At some point you need to decide that what's around at the moment is "adequate" for your needs .... that said, if its only a few days away then its probably worth the wait :-)

Hey guys,
I think I'll stick with my 'old' 9950 for a little while. I'm putting my graphics card in soon, so I'll get some games and see what's bottle-necking the system. Can't computer components just freeze for a little bit!! Cheers, Chris.

The only bottle neck I can see is the 2gb of memory, but that's easy upgraded in the future.
You shouldnt have any performance issues with a 3.3ghz 9950. :)

Yeah it should be fine. I'll be getting new stuff all the time, so it's inevitable that I'll have to upgrade the CPU soon enough. New jobs paying a bit more, so I have to spend it on something :)
