Hi,
What is the actual difference between a quad and a core 2 duo, in terms of performance?

For example, a E6420 and a Q6600 - is there much real world difference?

I've been trying to find an article on the net comparing it when playing games, using photo shop etc but can't.

the answer is : it depends

it depends on what you do as to wether you will see a difference. Some applications mostly photoshop/video editing/film encoding/decoding etc will have quite a big difference.

though, more and more apps will appear over time that will make more use out of the extra cores. for example some games (not many) are starting to use extra cores etc

i would say it also depends on how often you upgrade. if you upgrade often. dont worry too much unless your finding your pc slow. if you only upgrade every 3/4 years then a quad is a great investment.
