was wondering whether there is a material difference between 1GB and 2GB ram models of a graphics card?

Thinking of a 7850 card here, not a big gamer do play civ 5 a couple times a week. prior to that completed skyrim

currently on hd 4870 - i want to upgrade primarily because this card idles very hot, is loud and uses a lot more electricity than 7850.
