Hello everyone,

Just curious as to what the advantages are going from an intel q6600 to a Yorkfield q9550 e.g. 2.83. I know less about cpu's and it seems the York has the 45nm manufacturing process and a larger L2 cache. I've read that they clock higher then the q6600. I wonder if they kick out less heat than the 6600 too.
Finally, the Xeon, what's this fella all about then pls? Buisness applications? I'll admit I know diddly squat about these.:o (all I can see is that they have the Yorkfield badge once again)

Thanks for all the help so far btw :)

They run quicker clock for clock, run cooler, can overclock higher and use less power.

Oh, and they cost a lot more :p

(q6600 vs q9550)

Basically that's it.

If you can afford it, go for one, but don't expect to see a stellar performance increase.

The socket 775 Xeons are just Q9xxx series CPUs with a different name. There is a rumour that their prefetchers are tuned for server applications but this has not been confirmed. I have a Xeon X3350 = Core 2 Q9450.

Too righ. I've o/c it to 3.29 from 2.4 and the difference is unbelievable. From 2.4 to 3.0 there wasn't much difference at all. The temps are still no higher than high 40's for one core and the lowest two cores are in their high thirties. Chuffed!

Tried to reach 3.6, maybe a little adventurous and it erm...let me know it didn't like it, so back to 3.3 for now. Temps are very good so to go higher I'll need to change the voltages and that's where my knowledge grinds to a halt for the moment. Must admit, have learnt a lot over the last few days. Never really studied a mobo manual so intensely before. Enjoying it.
