Differences in Pay

Just found out the site that i am working at, the top earners earn more per month (before tax) than i do per year (before tax) this just sickens me. Then when they have an IT problems they wonder why you don't jump through hoops for them.

The company i work for uses an IT contractor because it benefits them, they pay the IT contractor obviously more money than I make per year and IT ends up getting shafted because of it. They can get away with not paying benefits to the IT contractor and they treat the IT contractor like ****.

The guy i sit next to who is the biggest **** ive ever met, most pompous person on the planet, went to eton boys school or whatever, speaks like a total posh git. He makes more per quarter than i do per year and he does hardly any work. He spends most of the day doing fall and occasionally has a meeting or has to do a document. But expects me to run around like a little helper. Barking orders at me, realy makes me sick.

Sounds like it's you with the problem TBH. Rather than moan like a little girl, get off your arse and get youself in a similar position. The guy sounds pretty switched on to me, sit back and let the oiks do the work while creaming the rewards.

I do work hard to improve my pay bracket and I have done so. How many times I have had to say that is not about me but about IT in general.

I think I do a lot more than reboot a few computers. My point seems lost here because all of you fail to see a bigger context and try to make it personal. I give up.

edit: the reason I don't feel lucky to have my job is because I have worked hard to get where i am and did not get here because i know people or went to a special school.

which, contrary to what you may think is how most people get their high pad jobs...

groen mate, your on the wrong forum to moan about pay, I learnt this a long time ago, you just get vilified, for most people on here life is very black and white, you don't like your job?, just change it, no jobs in your area?, just move, no education?, just pop along to your local uni and enrol, life is that simple, fail to follow these rules then your probably just a lazy scummer.

I think the reason for that is that a large number of us have done just what you said...

Yes, some people can't do that as easily but it's not our fault is it? There is no point moaning if your past decisions/lack of drive is what is holding you back.

Sorry groen, but IT is a facility to make them money, like a photocopier, or a set of lights for the office. It doesn't make money directly, so they like any business will pay as little as they can for the facility to be functional but nothing more than that.

If IT made money directly they'd pay more for their kit, and pay you more to maintain it.

This is a problem on it's own, a lot of businesses think IT doesn't help but just adds more problems.

Shouldn't you be working now and not posting on the forums ?

MW

No I am browsing on the forums at work, not doing any work at all sitting eating having a coffee been paid for it. :p

Why does it sicken you?

I was in a similar situation a few years ago (I was about 17) and realised I was never going to make the big money in systems support. So I skilled up in different areas. I suggest if you want the bigger money, you do the same, rather than just moaning about it.

Maybe look at it as a positive that your company gives you the opportunity to step up and earn within the higher brackets once you gain experience?

If that was the case, I'd be wanting to prove myself and not complain about how life is so unfair.

To go anywhere in it support you need to:
Have customer service skills, don't be a grumpy got, be receptive, be interested.
Work hard. Your not a salesman. You are an expense.
Pitch in:how can you save the company money?! How can you improve the business using IT? maybe if you pitched in rather then moaning about it you might be further along.

Whilst it's not quite that simple depending on your situation you're not far off really :p

When I didn't like aspects of my job I've changed it to suit, I too live in an area with naff all jobs so I look further afield. My 'office' (I use the quotes as I now work form home most of the time) is 100 miles away.

Education is a trickier one though as it isn't an easy one to fix, and can seriously affect point number 1, so I'll give you that one :p

In my job I see everyones pay, I know exactly where I'm ranked in the scheme of things. I appreiciate and understand that every individual has a different worth to the company and in most cases holds a different role. I've seen bonuses paid to individuals that total more than what 6 employees earn on average.

More often that not, depending on the industry, the bonus is deserved even if it might not seem like it or that you disagree with.

One of the most stupid threads i've ever read on here....and thats saying something.

OP your lack of understanding of how business or economics works is shocking.

So you think that someone in IT support should earn more if they work for a very successful company? How exactly would this be 'fair' to the people that have the EXACT same if not better skill set than you that just through whatever reason didnt get the job at the bigger company and got stuck doing the same role in a smaller company?

Dont even try comparing yourself to people with actual very high skilled positions such as soliciters/ legal consultants. These people earn good money for a reason.

Based on your mentality a cleaner should earn more money working for HSBC than a cleaner working in potentially biohazardous conditions for the NHS.....get real. Market rates are market rates......deal with it. The big companies wouldnt be 'big' companies and ultimately the economy would fail if they ****ed their profits away to every average Jo with a chip on their shoulder.

Contractors earn more because they dont have a 'guaranteed' source of income, they have to pay their own tax and NI, they have to account for every single sick day or holiday and they have to pay their own insurances...

Stay away from IT support, it isn't a career unless you're happy being average

You need to specialise in your own time to a new area, take a trainy role in that area.

Then contract after a year or two
Very simple

Welcome to IT. They can sack you any time and there will be 50 Indians in line to take your place. Or they can sack your department and outsource to India and get 3 guys for the same price as you. Can't say the same for lawyers, can you?

Quality lawyers for you fresh from Delhi quick lets set it up before anyone else does! Legal advice from people unaware of British law winner!

This is total BS, I think IT is completely under valued, especially sysadmin and IT systems support. Yea when it is not working all hell breaks lose and if they can't do something and they need IT help to do their own job sufficiently, then i am expected to do it. Mean while they are on almost 10 times my salary. IT realy needs to force these big companies to pay them a fair salary because this sort of thing is outrages.

Are you joking? You have gone into a market that is massively overflooded with loads of people who can do your job. It's really not that hard to learn and it's full of people who took jobs within the computer industry because they either didn't know what else to do or it was just the only thing they could do.

Face it, you've gone into a market that doesn't pay well and I don't see why it should to be honest. Options:

1) Try and make an impression to get promotions
2) Be like a lot of people within It and just slack off and accept it.
3) Go back to school

Let me put it another way. You don't know how to drive a lorry and this country would fall apart without lorry drivers, so should they get paid more than you? No, it's a low skill job so the pay is low. In fact, lorry drivers get paid well considering.
