Different 360 and XBLA game demo/trial mode trouble.

If your current 360 (any version) is different from your first 360 (for any reason) then you may find that your purchased XBLA games will only in Demo/Trial mode unless you are signed into Live!

If you're unable to log into Live! (No net connection, behind firewall, on dialup etc.) then you are stuck, but maybe not for long.

After my launch day 360 died (see here) I received a warranty replacement 10 days ago. Knowing about the way the 360 licences work (see below**), I fired up the new 360 and confirmed that without a Live! connection my XBLA games were stuck in Demo/Trial mode. I tested out on theory that you only need to re-download the XBLA game for it to work but this failed to work.

In an attempt to resolve the problem I called the Xbox support number last Tuesday with the call going as followed;

I described the problem to the operator and said that the problem had only occurred after my replacement 360 arrived.

The operator confirmed my details and then put me on hold for a minute while she spoke to a colleague. When she came back, she asked me for the new console serial from the replacement 360 (you find this out without looking on the back of the box by going to System Blade > Console Settings > System Info).

After taking the new details from me, she confirmed the problem with me and then put me on hold for a second time. Not long later she came back and informed me that she had been told to ask me to make a new Silver account on my current 360 and to wait approximately 3 days for the problem to be resolved.

With a little scepticism I made the new Silver account on my replacement 360 and left things as they were until Thursday.

Thursday afternoon, I decided to have another go at re-downloading all of my previously purchased premium content back onto my original 360 HDD (this didn't take long as I still had everything on the HDD from my first download).

After re-downloading my premium content I signed out of Live!, unplugged the Cat5 cable, and signed back into my profile offline. To my surprise all of my XBLA games now worked offline.

I can't confirm at what point my XBLA games started to work offline but, if you call the Xbox support line, try the following in this order:

1) Call Xbox support and explain the situation along with giving them your new 360 serial,

2) After calling, make a new Silver account on your 360,

3) Allowing at least 24 to 48 hours, re-download your XBLA games and premium content.

If all goes well you should be able to play your XBLA games offline without being stuck in Demo/Trial mode.

Xbox 360 Licences

When you buy and download any XBLA game two licences are created; The first is tied to the 360 on which the content was purchased, the second is tied to your GamerTag.

To play offline, your 360 licence and GamerTag licence must be matched. If the two licences differ (for example you are using your HDD and GamerTag on a friend's 360) then each time you load an XBLA game, the 360 must verify the GamerTag licence over Live!. If the 360 cannot verify the GamerTag licence then the XBLA game reverts to Demo/Trial mode as if it were not purchased.

Here's hoping that if there isn't an immediate solution with Europe's release of the Elite (which is looking unlikely as I would have thought that some kind of news/rumour would have been doing the rounds), Microsoft will be implementing something in the autumn update.

The solutions aren't much help if you don't have access to Live!

Hummm. I always figured the serial was for registering your new console with them (I'v had 4, no not RQoD). The silver account I thought was for them to put points on to allow you to download the games again.

Well I will phone them next week and see what they say as I have the same problem. :)

Hows the whole 360Monster thing going? Still involved with that?
haha, yeh I have come crawling back. 360M went multiplatform. One of the admins just wizzed me off too much and I left. It didn't care about the community any more and just wanted hits. I never wanted to write for a site like that.

So yeh currently I'm writing for no one. Which is rather annoying. Came back where I know most members arnt knobs and decent discussion can take place :)

Shame really as I've always thought it's one of the best designed sites around.

Good to see you back. :)

Sneaky edit :p

Oh hell yeh Ants one of the best designers I have ever known. A place is always open should I want to return. But that wont be till one of the admins leaves :(

Anyway.. back to the topic before I get suspended lol

The third part took 3 months for me. I kept phoning every 2 weeks and they would not phone me back to sort the issue out. You can hate the PS3 all you want, but its DRM is far ahead of the 360's.

I had my 10020 points replaced and I bought better games for e.g. Pacman CE instead of Pacman. After all the trouble it did work out in the end. If it happens again (which it most likely will as this thing isn't reliable) I will just ask for a supervisor.

I asked them if they are doing anything to sort it out and the person over the phone didn't even know what I was talking about. She laughed and said the problem has been sorted, but I said what if it happens again because the failure rates are so high however she didn't understand the problem.

Microsoft need to sort this out in the next update but I bet they won't because the problem hasn't escalated enough yet.

I'm betting Microsoft is working on something as we speak.

The announcement of the 120 GB HDD and Elite consoles brought the subject to the surface again (last time this problem was major news was with the first big downtime of the Live! service).

There is a section on the US Xbox site regarding the current situation regarding the transfer of content and that some items will require a Live! connection.

Thanks very much Zico for posting about it. Very interesting read, and I bet there are a lot of people who don't know about it at all. I am currently thinking about upgrading my 360 to an elite, or at least getting a 120GB HDD. I was reading up on it yesterday, but you did a great job of getting all the info in one place.

Thanks again.

You're welcome.

Seeing as I've pre-ordered an Elite for my brother (will be trading his launch day 360 in) I'm going to have to go through the process again to sort out his XBLA games (though he only has 3 and no other premium content).

As I mention above, hopefully Microsoft will sort something out soon to allow a smooth change over of licences between boxes.

After reading your post, it occured to me, that I had replaced my 360. When my first one died, I swapped it in shop for a new one. So, I have just checked and the early Live Arcade games I have, do require me to be logged in to Live to play!

I do hope they sort out a system for it, one that allows you to sort it out easily through Live.

The transfer cable does not solve the problem. Americans who bought the Elite who traded in their Premium were left having to phone Microsoft Support.

This problem has been around since the beginning of the 360, they haven't fixed it in the last 3 updates, why should the fix it now?

You don't know if Microsoft will fix it with the fall update. They don't have to fix it as it isn't affecting a large number of users at the moment.

Like I said, once this escalates and more people buy a 360 and more break down from the first 10 milllion that bought them, then we may see an update then.

I didn't say the cable solved the problem.

I know that the problem existed from launch.

I've never said Microsoft will definately be releasing a fix in the Autumn update.

Of course Microsoft have to release a fix for the licencing.

More and more people are becoming aware of the problem when they get hold of there warranty replacements and/or upgrade to the Elite. Remember that the Elite is now going to be available to buy in both the EU and Australia by the end of August.

personally i don't see what the problem is apart from its "cool to moan".

1st off you must have had a LIVE account to buy the arcade game, by swapping consoles why wouldn't you not continue to use LIVE? and even if you don't have a gold account you can still log in on if your account if it has reverted to the Free Silver one. Yeah they may be a very, tiny amount that maybe move their console from one internet enabled room to another that isn't, but thats not MS problem is it.

The real problem as I see it is other profiles on my 360 won't be able to play content I've bought.

The mrs loves a bit of Boom Boom (Rocket) ;) and will have to play on my profile after I've upgraded afaik. Might have to give MS a call over this as she won't be a happy bunny. (Haven't told her yet!)

Whilst a lot of people do love to moan, the main point was the thread was started because rather than merely moaning, someone did something about it. Almost un-heard of for a forum.

Or you could just sign in with your profile first on one controller, then let your mrs sign in on the second one. If you have two that is.
