Different types of ddr ram?

I was gonna give my friend a 1GB stick out of my computer seeing as windows 32 bit can't fully use 4 gig of ram. His current ram is pc3200 ddr400 as is mine.

When we put in mine, we got the dreaded beeps. Even with mine alone we still got it and tried it in all slots. Couldnt figure out why.

The only thing we noticed, is that his ram seemed quite thicker than mine. I don't know if that means anything. He was using two 512 sticks.

Can anyone explain why it seemed to incompatible/not working?

Which chipsets are the boards?

It may well be that it is high-density RAM, and some chipsets won't accept it.

I was sure they were both low density ram, ill get the model of both mobos for you?
