It depends on where you have your servers and what budget you have. If you are talking from a business perspective then the best place to house your server would be in a data centre. You can then buy transit from various different carriers in the form of 100BaseT or 1000Base over fibre. Even thought you get a 100BaseT port you can pay a set fee for say 10Mb and extra costs for bursting above your agreed amount. Obviously this is business grade so is not cheap. If i remember correectly one of the members Adz runs a hosting/ISP so he should be able to offer better advice.

If however you are talking about a personal game/web server in your garage then there is no viable option to xdsl or cable if it's in your area.

In some areas you can get WiMAX (wireless) but thats not really suitable for server hosting.

Like I said, if its personal then asdl or cable is fine. You have to watch if you have any caps on your package though.

it really depends what you want to host.

what you need to remember, that when it comes to hosting, its the upload speed that counts, not the download, so just go for the connection with the fastest upload that you can afford.

SDSL will be the best to go for if its not too expensive for you, as the upload is the same as the download, whereas on cable and adsl, the upload is usually a lot lower, 256k usually

Once you hit the realms of decent upload speeds at home (SDSL, leased line etc.), it becomes more cost effective to colocate your server in an established data centre. It's not as expensive as some make it out to be; 1-2U of space with a 10Mbps port and 1Mbit of transfer (~320GB/month) in London can be had for about £100/month. Plus, you have to bare in mind that the UK is very expensive when it comes to colocation, and putting your server up in a European data centre would be much more effective.

Either way, running anything remotely mission-critical at home, off a residential internet connection is not a sustainable solution :)

You can get a good colo in London for about £50 per month.

If you wanting to host 1 small personal website on a home adsl connection that would be ok. But with small hosting pacakages starting at 15 per year there is no point having your pc on 24/7 for a website. It will cost you more in electricity.

Just do add. If you are using a home line as a hosting platform your isp will soon catch on and probably cut you off. Check the T&C of your ISP prior to choosing.

I tend to reccommend http://rack365.ie/ if you are on a very tight budget. Never had anything less than professional service from them and the network is very good. Server's are located in Ireland but that only adds a few ms to your ping times.

And if you need to install something on the server you need to pack your friggin passport :p
