I have noted two versions of windows live messenger. Both for XP and one looks Vista themed the other the regular.

On my desktop I allowed my Microsoft webcam software to download and install the latest version of Live messenger and on my laptop I installed it manually via the official site.

The dekstop (webcam) is the Vista themed version.

Which version is the most current and why are the versions different in appearance?

8.5 is the latest.

Here's the two most recent versions, 8.5 on the left and 8.1 on the right:

Latest Version is:
8.5.1.1302.1018

There is a Beta 9 coming out soon though.

Thanks for the excellent replies. Any idea what version 9 is to offer over 8.x?

- Theme of the client
- Adding features that Messenger Plus! Live offers as an addition to the original client
- Family Safety features - making sure your children and those younger are safe
- Windows Vista and Windows Aero (previously known as Aero Glass) enhancements
- Audio/video features
- Virus and malware protection
- File sharing and modifications to Sharing Folders
- Video sharing
- Windows Live Spaces within the main window (eg: blog directly from Messenger)
- Windows Live Mail within the main window (eg: send mail directly from Messenger)
- Added plug-ins and sharing activities
- Colour functionality in names by default

That any better? That should just install WLM itself. Some kind of installer is being distributed now. It's about 2.5Mb and you choose what WLM components you want and then it installs them. The full 16Mb download should just be the WLM client itself.
Sounds cool. :)

which version had the transparent "dashboard" bit? that was cool, but it's not in the latest one.

the blue bit at the top of this:

ignore the different layout, it's been messed with - this is 8.5.1302.1018

FINALLY! At least it'll stop all the chavs having hundreds of bits of coding in their names because of plus!

edit: did a bit of a search and here are some other features:

* Multiple Points Of Presence Suport - Now you can sign into Messenger v9 from several different locations and remain signed in, In v8.5 and under, signing in at a new pc will sign you out anywhere else.
* Signature sounds - Make sound signatures instead of just graphical ones
* Per contact sounds - chose a sound to associate with each of your contacts’ actions
* Animated Display Pictures - now you can use animated .gif files as your display picture
* Links in Status Message - Links in the status message are now clickable
* SPIM reporting - report and block users who spam you via IM.
