Different wired modem router performance

I have recently migrated from Tiscali to Talktalk and received a D-Link 2640R Modem Router so I swapped out my at least 4 year old first model of Netgear DG834 with latest DG Team 0849 firmware. The D-link worked really well on my fully wired network until after I applied a 24Mbps speed boost to my account on Monday 19th October. Last week I started to get dropped connections. I checked my router stats and noticed my line connection speed was 19686Kbps but the SNR was sometimes down to 4db which I know isn't good. So the first thing I did was check my wiring and actually found that one of the two BT wires into the back of the master socket was loose!! Great I thought as I re-fixed it that should cure the problem. Unfortunately I was still getting drop outs when the router stats showed 5.9db. So I then reconnected the Netgear to see how that coped and to date it hasn't dropped out but the connection speed is lower at 17529Kbps and the SNR is a rock steady 6db.
However using the Talktalk Speed Test I was getting consistent download speeds up to 15.79Mbps with the D-Link but a best of 14.42Mbps with the Netgear. Other speed test sites confirm the difference.
Why are the connection and download speeds different?
Does the newer D-Link contain newer technology making it a faster device in a wired setup albeit more prone to drop outs?
It appears the Netgear can hold a connection better so if I were to upgrade it which model would compare to the D-Link's speed? Remember wireless performance isn't important.
Sorry it's long winded but thanks in advance for your patience in reading it
