Ok, I have a fairly old, but roomy and sturdy aluminium case. I've never used case fans before, but with my new AMD x4 955 it seems I need to fit some. There are two ventilation holes at the back and two at the front (although one is covered by the drive bays).

However, measuring the holes for where I would screw the fan I'm finding that the holes are square 1x1cm holes and not evenly aligned. The two on the right side are closer together than the ones on the left side (see picture).

The distances between the holes are also not the same. 7cm horizontal, 6.5cm on left side and 5cm on right side. Any ideas how I can mount a fan in this case? I've been looking around but not found any workable solutions...

That looks nice and I have plenty of room for it, might give it a try. My wife actually came up with the best solution. Just superglue the fans to the case!

looking at your mock up of the fan placment, it looks like there should have been one of those plastic caddys for mounting the fan to the case.
you still get them now and again in very old desktop case's where the monitor stood on top. If i remember correctly Dell where quite fond of using them.
