I've had the worst two weeks of my life in regards of computers. Now I seem to be stuck with the worst predicament to make.

Last week my 980ti died and somehow damaged my motherboard (got motherboard to work now) so I ended up paying £1500 on a new system.

However, I now have no GPU but I'm currently using an old 750ti just to be able to run my new sytem with a display.

The problem I'm facing is if I was to get lucky on getting my hands on a high end RTX card I found out my current monitor will not be able to support it without an expensive adapter which costs over £100.

My current display is this - BenQ XL2411Z 24 inch 144 Hz

If I was to get my hands on a new high end RTX card I would either need to buy a that expensive adaptoer or buy an entire new monitor. Sure 1080p displays are pretty cheap nowadays but I'm thnking about going 1440p for the first time. The 980ti I've used with this 1080p display I've never had trouble reaching 144+ fps to matcth the refresh rate. However, if I was to buy a 1440p 144hz monitor how much of a difference would it be? How hard will it be to maintain FPS for the 144hz on a 1440p display?

So these are my options, I need help and opinions if anyone had a similar problem.

1) Buy a high end RTX card and purchase the adapter for my 1080p 144hz monitor.

2) Buy a RTX card which has DVI-D display, such as this one https://www.overclockers.co.uk/pali...ddr6-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-04n-pl.html

3) Buy RTX GPU and a 1440p 144hz monitor.

1080p 144hz vs 1440p 144hz. What gpu will I need and is it worth the jump?

curious? Why wouldn't your monitor support an RTX GPU? Looking at the specs of said monitor, it has a DVI port and HDMI. Since majority of the GPu have DP or HDMI, can't you just use a DVI to DP cable which is less than a tenner

Monitor has HDMI ?

Sorry I should have said. The monitor I have only supports 60hz HDMI cable. Not 144hz. The adapter for 144hz is very expensive which is the whole reason to this thread, do I look for a new monitor?

hmm i kinda understand.

After digging a bit deeper.. seems your monitor can't handle 144hz without a dual link DVI to Displayport Active adapter.... and a simple cable converter won't do. Even then.. looks like some folks say even that has a probability of not working properly

Personally i'd get a new monitor which has a displayport. I game at 1080 240hz so i can't tell you whether there is much difference between 1440 and 1080 @144hz as i've not tried. Plus monitors are cheap

Are ypu happy with your monitor ? If yes then the 2060 sort of makes sense.

i assume the monitor is running at native resolution. Have you also checked it's running at the correct refresh rate (within windows... not just through nvidia control panel)? I know it sounds silly but i had similar issues when setting up the missus work laptop. The refresh rate was set too low and started blurring our when switching windows.. particularly noticable when dragging windows around.

Yes windows and nvidia is native 144hz. it's like AA is a problem and everything is jaggered and not smooth, i can't find any fix it's killing me.

Have you tried installing your monitors proper driver? Windows might be running a generic for the panel.

Also check in NV settings to see if there's anything that might help, I don't have a Nvidia card at hand to check for options unfortunately.

Surprised the adapters are so expensive.

Given what's been said on this thread, I'd buy the new GPU (whichever one you want) and run the monitor over HDMI, then upgrade to a better monitor as the primary, keeping this one as a secondary.

I tried a different pc and its still the same. I tried different monitor and 60hz cable and its still the same. what is happening?

not that it should matter, but is this a fresh install of windows, or did you run a DDU with new drivers when inserting the GPU?

Have you checked to make sure the system settings were set to Quality rather than Performance?
