Digital 5.1 Setup

A mate has recently brought an Audigy 4 sound card. He wants to connect it to his digital amp so he can have 5.1 digital sound. He connected the amp with an optical cable to the digital output socket on the card but with no joy.
I know this card works fine in digital 5.1 mode with digital speakers, but will it work with a digital amp as well?

I have an Audigy 2zs connected to my Denon amplifier which works fine. However I don't know whether the connectors on the Audigy 4 are significantly different. I use a 3.5 mm minijack to phono adaptor and a digital coaxial lead to the Denon.

Games/Music = Stereo
Pre-encoded soundtracks (e.g DVDs) = 5.1

Remember to actually enable digital out on the card and disable Dolby Digital Decoding in the AudioHQ thing.
