I'm looking to get into audio production on my PC running Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for decent DAW software for Windows?

I've looked into a few (FL Studio, Cubase, ProTools etc) and am unable to make a choice. If I were on a Mac I'd choose Logic Pro without a doubt but since I moved to Windows I'm not sure what the best choice is.

I'm looking at making mainly MIDI based music (neofolk, ambient etc). Does anyone have any recommendations at all?

Would you use Adobe Audition?

I was always under the impression that Adobe Audition was pretty much just for recorded audio rather than having a lot of MIDI instruments and synths like the other DAWs. Because of that I never really considered it since I'm not looking at recording any live instruments at the moment.

Have a look at Ableton Live 9 or whatever the latest version of Propellerheads Reason is.

Should be demos available for both and then make your choice from there.

I've heard that Reaper is pretty good for the budget conscious, if it fits your criteria? I'm going to give it a go myself soon but I'm new to all of this so just echoing what I've heard elsewhere.

If you buy a current midi controller a lot of them come with a lite version of Ableton which is still pretty powerfull.

Bitwig Studio is a new Daw that is from ex ableton devs and has been getting good reviews so might be worth checking out to.

Yeah I was avoiding Abelton Live since it seems more targeted at live musicians rather than MIDI producers but I'll check out the demo.

Reason sounds cool though although more towards the dance scene as far as I can tell.

Cool. Never heard of that before. I'll check it out.

Yeah I have to have a look at MIDI controllers. I have a USB MIDI keyboard but I might get something else if I really get into this.

In all honesty any of the mentioned programs will work for what you need.

You can produce any type of music on any DAW that's down to the user.

Get the demo's and see which one suits you best.

I've tried all of them and found I got on best with Ableton and I do no live work with it whatsoever.
