Digital Camera ~£100

Whatever you like. At that price point they are all much the same, the only real differences will be the extra gimmick and bonus features. Nothing will be more than average as far as image quality.

have a look at bridge cameras, fujifilm s2980 is priced around £100-£120

i had a fujifilm s2800 as my first camera which is essentially the older version of the s2980 and it was great, lots of options on it and it gave good images

best Ixus you can afford, I'd find an extra 25 quid or so as it puts you in a bette market segment.

You're the reason Cannon get away with charging extra for compacts that are not as good as their competition! That Samsung I mentioned above utterly demolishes anything at it's price range.

Samsung build quality is pretty questionable in their compact range <£100. I can't speak for that specific model, but we used to find consistent faults with most of their cheaper models. Unfortunately, panasonic have gone downhill in their budget range, but for £100 they still have some decent offerings. And, as much as Canon do price gouge a bit, their cameras are well made.

Generally though people who want a cheap compact what something small, easy to use and that produces great images straight out of the camera which is exactly what the IXUS range does. I know dozens of people with them and I've never heard a complaint they just work.

To be fair you will find very little difference in a £100 camera as regards to picture quality. That is why I suggested a second hand Canon G9. A G9 will be a noticeable improvement on a brand new £100 camera.

The WB690 is from a much higher price range initially and has filtered down as it is an older model, it is very solidly built. The compacts I see returned most are Nikons, on a side note.
