Hi guys.

I'll jump straight in & ask if I'm correct in saying that a Digital camera with Full HD movie recording won't be as good as a dedicated Full HD camcorder? A quick look in the high street catalogue also tells me a still photo on a camcorder won't be as high a resolution as a camera.
I'm pretty much new to photogaphy and didn't get much chance to use my last camera (Panasonic Fz18) which got stolen, things seem to have moved on quite a bit since, including all these super-super zooms! :)

So I'm going on my holidays late this year (first time abroad too & solo!), possibly India or Africa and I know come that time the cameras/camcorders might have been refreshed again so I could hold off a few months. Anyway the camera I've got my eye on at the moment is a Nikon P100 & the camcorder I quite like is the Panasonic HS60.

Do you guys like to take both camera & camcorder on holiday with you? What do you think of my chioce?

Cheers :)

If you're comparing a digtal compact camera, then an HD camcorder is of course more likely to produce better visuals and sound.

Digital SLRs, with their large sensors and high quality lenses, can create even better film, but they're relatively feature poor compared to others and are far more difficult to handle.

I suspect that a HD camcorder will perform better in low light than a compact camera. Physical sensor sizes are similar but a HD camcorder only needs 2 million pixels instead of the 6 million plus a typical compact will have.

....and is there a 30 min recording cap on a dslr to avoid the extra import duty on it been classed as a camcorder etc. Slight handi-cap

My FZ38 (2 up from the FZ18) films for 29m29s (for reasons stated above) at 1080i, and it comes out pretty well! Does the job for the small amount of recording I do anyway :)

Thanks for helping guys. I didn't know about this 30min limit thing with movies, you learn something new everyday I guess. I'm starting to sway towards that Nikon P100 camera with it's (26x) super zoom. I've checked out a few reviews and they've all been pretty average. It does HD filming but I'll try to concentrate on photography for my holiday with maybe one or two film clips. I did like the look of the Olympus SP800 with it's whopping 30x zoom but totally put off by lack of viewfinder.
