Hi all,

looking to buy a digital SLR camera, but I am unsure as to whats hot and whats not these days. Could you kind folks please suggest a couple of makes/models for me to look at. Thanks :)

You know that Hasselblad is saying that the H3 is a Digital SLR, so I would say that a H3 with a matching back would be the hottest DSLR you could get. Maybe a Mamiya ZD?

BWT: I am not trying to be cute, but if money was no object these would be the ones I would look at.

Try the Nikon D50 or if you've got a bit more to splash out try the Canon 400D. Both are very good.

Please have a quick scan through the history on this forum, as your question has probably been asked twice a week for the last year.
We'll be more than happy to help post that, but there's a lot of info on here already that will be very helpful.

Well to give you an idea of what I'm looking for, so far the Canon EOS 400D is what I was thinking of getting. Anything better for that price range?

What makes the Nikon D80 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 so better/expensive?

To give a bit of background info, its for a family members present, and I have been given the task of researching what to get. For someone who wants to get into/start photography. I myself am completely happy with my Sony DSC-N1 ;) Just so you can see where I'm coming from :)

Well as a first time SLR'r just getting into photography, i bought a canon 350d on thursday (£460 with lense and bag) and cant argue with it at all! thanks to the help from these forums and an idiots guide to digital photography i have being very pleased with the results!

Also consider the Sony A100.
Normally I would say get yourself down to a shop & handle them all (e.g. a lot of people find the Canon & little on the small side) but as it's for a present  .

*OK things have now changed* considering a prosumer instead of a DSLR.

Which would you get Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1 or Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50, imagine they are the same price :D ?

Tbh if u dont know which one you dont need one. dslr are so common place nowadays if u knew anything about hpotography to need a dslr ud know

The above are not DSLR, they are prosumer cameras.

Don't see how you were right? But that aside, the thing is the camera is not for me, so makes it a lot harder to find something suitable, specially as it is a surprise, cant just ask the person directly, can I :p If the camera was for me I wouldnt need to post ;)

you said it was for someone who wanted to get into photography, they would be dissapointed with anything other than a dslr

it depends if they want to take some snaps and some nice zoom shots or they're actually getting into photography properly
nothing compares for me now after owning a Dslr, but if you need an all in one kit that doesn't require a lot of purchasing after the fact, additional lenses etc then the Fz50, the canon pro IS etc are all good fun cameras to start off with

Yep exactly what I was thinking :) If lenses were cheap I would probably go with the DSLR's, but prefer an all in one package, with little or no purchases needed afterwards, until next camera.

Thanks for all your comments ;)
