what's the best program for retrieving pictures from digital cameras?

If you want something just to dump them into a temp/storage folders then Windows on inbuilt mechanism isn't too bad. I've taken 2GB of photos from my phone that way.

Or simply remove the storage card from the camera, and put it into a suitable card reader....

copy/cut and paste. then just rename folder.
