Hey all,

In my home we only have Sky, no aerial for terrestial TV - so no idea about anything outside of Sky!

My dad has asked me for help and i am a bit stuck! A few years ago he bought this stupid CD/DVD and VHS comined machine which records his TV to either DVD or VHS (Salesman assurred him it was the best bit of kit EVER! (twit!))

Anyway, now that the Digital Switchover has happened my dad finds he can't record digital TV. He has asked me to see i can find a digital recorder that also plays CD and DVD - so records TV to the hard drive, but can also be used to play DVDs and music Cds etc.

Is there such a thing?

Ta all!!

Use / get Sky + for recording (or a Humax/Samsung Freesat recorder)
Use existing combi kit for playback only

That's a freeview model. The OP has stated he doesn't have an aerial :)

As above ...

If its SKY - you need Sky+
If it is Virgin - you need Tivo
If its Freesat - you need a Freesat PVR or a TV with a Freesat tuner that allows recording to USB.

+ your existing set-up or a cheap Bluray player (not really much point in buying a DVD player). Wouldn't recommend going for an all in one recorder as they tend to be pricey, very temperamental + have some sort of limitation to the functions unless you pay top dollar.

OK an update, the TV my dad has is this 6 - 7 year old thing that cost about £2k and it is ****. An Aquos 32" thing that has all its connectors built into the stand which runs into a box at the bottom of the stand! The main thing is it has NO HDMI input/output, only SCART and a few others (yellow, red, white etc)

He has steered away from Sky (doesn't want a dish or extra wiring) and is looking at seperates, ie a freeview recorder and a seperate DVD player.

Can anyone recommend a decent setup that will be easy to use for an old timer and firstimer to Freeview recorders?!

Ta all!!

*UPDATE*

Got him 2 seperates - a Sony DVD player and this:

http://humaxdirect.co.uk/product.asp?ProdRef=10067 (Humax Freeview twin tuner)

It does exactly what he wants and he is happy with it (thanks for the advice), but the guy he got out to set it all up said he could not get it the Humax working on its own and so needed to keep the original freeview box connected.

Surely that is not right? I was hoping to get rid of the freeview box and use the Humax to connect to the TV directly.

Did you get an aeriel at last?
The humax will want it plugged in directly to it, then the humax into your TV, then all should work fine.

Quite how it is recording with the freeview box still in the mix is somewhat vexing to me.

Doesnt sound right to me

Move the ariel lead from the old pvr to the new humax and if I were you scrap the old scart cable as well. Humax should have come with its own scart - may not make that much difference though.

Pass through recording shouldnt be an issue (Ive done it in the past, nothing really wrong with it, but no reason to power two devices when only 1 is required).

Depending on how many scart connectors the tv has, connect both humax and dvd to seperate scart sockets (or worse case, humax to the tv and dvd into the humax)

Should be able to get the humax picture within 5 minutes (and scanning for its own channel settings)

edit - your Dad doesnt have an ariel? If thats the case then Im not sure how he is getting any tv at all!!
Even if the tv has some kind of small aireal somewhere (which probably means horrendous reception lol) this connector has to go direct to the humax and then pass through ariel from humax to tv.
