Hi all. I have spent some time looking into this one but have not been able to get a firm answer. Is it possible to digitally sign emails in MS Outlook without using an Exchange server?? Can anyone who has experience in this field let me know??

Thanks!

Thanks, so if I get a Verisign ID the options for signing emails in Outlook are enabled are they?

I do have a digital signature (though not Verisign) and the security options for emails are not enabled. From the Outlook help:

You can add a digital signature only if you and your message recipients are using Microsoft Exchange Server. Your system administrator must also have set up Microsoft Exchange Server security features on your computers.

I have a free personal Digital Signature from Thawte which works fine, I'm using it on thunderbird though not Outlook, but I don't see any reason why Outlook needs an exchange server to allow signing

You'll need to install your digital ID onto your computer in "Internet Explorer/Outlook" format, so Outlook can pick it up. It should automatically enable the "digitally sign" and "encrypt" options for any new emails you compose.

Does your digital ID provider claim they support Internet Explorer / Outlook? Maybe have a look on their website how to install that ID in Outlook?
