Digitizing a DVD collection - What's the best way?

I recently decided that I'd rather have my DVD collection on a hard drive than taking up valuable space in my small flat.
What's the best utility to encode the films directly from the DVD to a Media Centre recognised format at a decent quality?
Also, how do I get the Media Centre library to recognise what film they are and download the appropriate synopsis, dvd cover etc?

there is quite a few apps to rip iso from your dvd and i think there is a thing called mymovies for media centre which does a lot of the synopsis and stuff for you if you google it
