Gah, it's finally packed in I think.

Turned my 360 on this morning to find the ring around the power button looking like this:

/ \
\ / (E74)

Proper gutted as I was just back into getting the most use out of it.

Now it's out of warrenty (it's 2 years old) so sending it back to MS isn't an option really.

So now I'll get to the main questions I want to ask.

Firstly, is there any chance I can fix the 360 myself? Or sending it away to someone to take a look at it for me? If there's a chance to save it then obviously I want to take that as it will be probably the cheapest option.

Now onto my second question, shall I not just ditch the 360 (and ditch the idea of buying a new 360) and just get a PS3?

I really could do with reliability of my console this time, I couldn't afford to buy another 360 and have it die on me again.

I would probably have ended up buying a PS3 anyway when MGS4 came out, so I might just bite the bullet and do it now.

I've only got 3 360 games at the minute as well so it's not really a lot to miss out on, could easily just trade them towards PS3 games.

Any advice appreciated :)

If you can get an old 60gb PS3 or a new Xbox360 then I'd recommend upgrading. It would appear those are the 2 most reliable consoles.

Didn't we have the exact same thread earlier? I think that's the hard drive, try reseating it / power the 360 on without it and see if it works.

Edit: Check here!

I checked there but my situation was slightly different ;)

I looked up the error on the google and it said it was an AV Cable error, but as I tried both my VGA cable and my standard composite one and got the same thing, I think it's something else.

Tried powering on without the Hard Drive too, same error :(

You reckon the 40GB ones aren't worth it then?

Anyone have any idea what my chances are of getting the 360 repaired without MS? Tempted to get a PS3 and see if I can get the 360 fixed as well (as long as it's relatively cheap).

Also, anyone spotted any good deals recentley?

The 40gb models are worth it, but if you can get a 60gb model go for that. It still plays PS3 games after all. There have just been more reports of failed 40gb models than 60gb models in the same way the new Xbox360's have been reliable.

Getting consoles fixed is easy, MS will fix it anyway, you'll just be charged, independant stores also have contacts to console repair companies (if you don't find one yourself).

I got a new 40Gb PS3 of ebay for £255 which is pretty decent, the prices fluctuate a lot lately, so its a good price at this time. Some big retailers do them for around £260 delivered aswell.

I would say the 40Gb ones are more reliable since they are built with the new 65nm chips instead othe 90nm ones found in the 60Gb model. They also run cooler and should run quieter as a result of this.

Get a 40GB PS3 you won't regret it.

There's a few cases of lense failures but it's nowhere near the level of Xbox failures like Nokkonwud seems to suggest, there were lense failure in the 60GB too it's to be expected with such a new technology. Either way, it's going to fail within warranty so you swap it at the shop.

40GB model is superior to 60GB unless you need backward compatibility, PS3 as a whole is a better quality product than Xbox, don't let a few laser diodes that died on the assembly line put you off.

It appears to be very much the opposite. There were hardly any failed 60gb threads, but there have been several 40gb models meeting their makers on here (and elsewhere).
