I'm sure there's probably other people here with the same dilemma as me with stock shortages etc. I was pretty certain on my new build, 5950x and a 6900xt. However, I'm now considering switching to a 3090 purely because of how hard it will probably be to get a 6900xt on the 8th.
I have freesync monitors, but they are gsync compatible.... 3090's are currently available and I should be getting the 5950x delivered pretty soon as I was 213 in the queue and 220 have come in with another 75 due in soon.
I read recently that the 3090 is a better buy for content creation and I don't do huge amounts of gaming. Yes there's a bit of a price difference but I can take that on the chin if it means I'm not waiting for months on end in a queue for a 6900xt.
So I guess my question is, what should I go for? Do I push the button on a 3090? Or do I wait till the 8th and risk not being able to get a 6900xt and the chance of 3090 stock being gone as well?
All thoughts and opinions welcome!

I would wait for the reviews myself the 3900 does for me seem a shocking amount of money for the perf uplift

Get the first option that you can, life is far too short for this stuff and I'm guessing you'd prefer to have it for over the Christmas period.

You can't go wrong with either option imo, had both a 3080 and now have the 6800XT and they're excellent cards.

The answer is very clear a 3090 as it is a content creation card and has studio drivers too, the 6900xt is a pure gaming card as has been proven by the 6800xt regarding work related use .

Don't bother waiting and get a 3090 and it's actually the right card for your use.

As he stated he's not just gaming on the card so a 6900xt is not a wise investment for his use. He clearly needs it for work related matters and content creation which the 3090 is the best consumer card for that unless you go Quadro's.

Not everyone is just gaming on graphics cards, my use is mostly work related and I require cuda for the apps I use. Also so much so I have two 3090's and will be in SLI as I require that much memory (to pool) and power, that really would have been as good as I can go on consumer cards. Only other option I had was Titans when and if they come out and also the Quadro's. Which we all know are shocking in price for the Titans and Quadros even more so.

The 6900XT is the better value card due to the lower price and judging by how well the AIB cards are performing against the 3090. The 6900XT should improve on them due to the extra CU's. Add some overclocking and you got a seriously fast card.

Read what he said, he's not just gaming on the card and requires it for work/content creation.

What card are you using at present for your work at present?
I know the feeling that you are going through, after months of waiting for supply to improve and the "release" of the Radeon series. I just pulled the trigger on a 3090 myself.
I would have prefered a 6800XT mind you. I don't think the stock on the 3090's are going to vanish soon, infact if anything their numbers are getting better.
So I would sa sit back, have a whiskey and a mincecake and hope that the 6800xt's materialize or at least see what the 6900XT performances are like.
If you go to other suppliers they are showing what brands they are expecting in over the next few weeks for which they have no outstanding preorders.

You know what.... you're right. Think I just needed that little kick tbh, been getting too caught up in the whole hype of it all. the 3090 is the better choice (if you don't go by price tags). I've just ordered.... should be delivered tomorrow. Cheers!

I'll take a nice cognac over a whiskey! :)
I've ordered the 3090 like you did, it's actually a relief now... it's probably worth the extra £££ just to be able to get rid of all this stress over low stock and endless waiting lists/queues!

Good choice mate, yes don't get caught up in the hype, I was same when they mentioned the 6900xt and thought wow I can save over £500+ per card.. reality after the 6800xt reviews is it's not right even without the cuda support that only NVIDIA has and Optix..

I needed a more grown up card, I can't see many investing in a 6900xt as it's nothing more than a 6800xt but 8CU more.. same memory and everything for the so called price of £1000 that it will never sell at anyways and stock issues for another 4 months.

Also you will see resale value of the AMD cards will crash compared to the 3080 and 3090 because later people will be buying 3080 and 3090 for work related matters, while the AMD cards will be gaming cards sold for a huge loss.

Also not knocking AMD but their drivers are humm.. and for work I need a stable system that works with my software, even if I didn't need cuda or optix.

Ohh to add... also the best gaming card is the 3090 full stop ;) if you want ray tracing enabled and 4K+ resolutions. The 6900XT will not be able to compete as we have seen from the 6800XT compared to the 3080, the 3080 really wins no matter how you look at it, if NVIDIA had 12GB VRAM on the 3080 no one will be looking at the 6800xt with it's 16GB even, too many other things not great with the 6800xt compared to a 3080.

I agree, I can't be bothered anymore with the notifications and rushing around trying to find stuff that is already sold out.
Taking this as an early crimbo pressie to myself and Sláinte!
