For performance and overclocking potential which of these to chips is likely to go further?

The Opteron is £90 more than the 3800. Can this be justified?

Recent 3800+ cpus have been clocking well but then so have the opterons. The only difference between the 2 is that opterons have 1mb l2 cache and the 3800+ only has 512kb. Imho if you have the extra then spend it

As I stated in your other thread, my X2 3800 overclocks far more than my 170 (although I was a bit unlucky in getting a poor clocking 170 :( ).

As sgoaty says, the recent batch of 3800s have been clocking very well and are good bang for the buck.

My 3800 makes up for the lack of cache by overclocking 250MHz faster than my 170 (stable). It does the same F@H WUs faster than the 170, so performs better too.

Stan :)

In contrast to Bigstan I can get my Oppy stable at 2.75GHz where I could only get my 3800 @ 2.6GHz stable (Bench stable under XP)
Whether it is worth the money is a hard call.

If you can afford it you may as well get the Oppy170
