Can a company ask for back payments of direct debits that they stopped taking?
never noticed the direct debit had stopped, never had any reminders or requests
the payments are for broadband

They stopped it?
So did the contract persist?
So there is money owed by they simply haven't been collecting it?

Seems rather strange, I would assume if there is an outstanding balance they can chase you for it, whether they can just nab it all through direct debit or not is another thing.

If you were still using the service/in contract, then yes, but if they ask for it in one go, tell them to sod off and set up a payment plan

Well I would imagine as you have a contract for their services then clearly they're entitled to receive the charges for said services.

Unless they have set up a variable direct debit I would imagine they can't just take the full outstanding amount in one go and they do have to inform you before hand anyway.

If you know they are legally entitled to the funds then why not just do the decent thing and pay them?
