yup you can but you need to ensure ports on the firewall are open and that the other clients have your external ip address.

Hi,

In a bit more detail a lot of people now use routers to connect to broadband rather than USB modems. The network your side of the router is a private network and the other side of the router is the internet which is a public network.

The problem this gives is when someone tries to connect to your server you need to make sure the following is in place.

(1) They are connecting to your Public (internet) IP address
(2) Your router is fowarding on the correct traffic to your server on the correct port numbers. Port numbers are used so devices such as your server know which application they are to send the recieved network traffic to.

I would also make sure any remote admin tools for the server are not using the standard user name and password to stop people taking control of your server. Also make sure it is fully patched !!!!

Hope that helps ;)

thanks for the advice. i will try and see what i can do. i am using a netgear dg834g router. i was told of a piece of software that you can use over the internet that fools the computers into thinking they are on a lan so making it really easy to set up. but can not remmember the name of it :(

thanks
