doubt that as there would be a hell of a lot of useless PC`s out there if they did that

He's correct actually, but your interpritation is wrong. DX10 is reported to not be backwards compatible for applications. In other words, a DX9 game will not run through DX10.

This may very well change though.

I think by not backwards compatible, it means a directx 10 game will require a dx10 card. But it'll be a long time before there will be any games that are exclusively dx10 (except for the PC version of halo 2 apparently).

My understanding is that Microsoft will use side-by-side assemblies, as they have always done with DirectX, so that multiple versions can be installed at any one time. This means the game only needs request the version it wants and it gets it.

From a technical standpoint, I can't remember any major DirectX version being "natively" backward compatible with the previous version. It just isn't possible.

There's a lot of guff on Google suggesting DirectX 10 wont be "backward compatible". But to me, it all sounds like it came from the same source. I can just imagine some clueless little reporter tipping the question at say WinHEC last year and him getting a vastly detailed response from somebody directly involved in DX development. Instead of trying to understand the techno-babble he just decided it would be easier to spread the FUD that Vista won't be able to play anything but DX10 games. In short... It's FUD, nothing more nothing less.
