Was ready to pre-order a game from Direct2Drive but then noticed that you usually have to patch the game using a modified patch that D2D release. The original patches wont work apparently?

What are people's experiences of this? What sort of timescale do D2D usually have for releasing a patch that will work for the downloaded version?

I'm beginning to think I may just wait and pay the extra to buy it in town when it's released as then at least I can install the latest patches as soon as they are released.

Just about every game sold on D2D can be had for less elsewhere. You must be loaded if you buy PC games on the high street because online is so much cheaper.

The internet is your friend.:D

I'm happy paying slightly more for D2D games as it conveniently avoids the problem of losing CDs, which I've managed to do for a ridiculous number of games.

I think he knows that dude. I think he was more asking about patching on D2D. Plus it sounds like he wants the game on the day of release and not everyone will get the game on day of release from the internet. I've had this problem before where ordered from internet retailers and the game turns up late. So with D2D offering from midnight of the release date I can see why some people like to use there service instead.

Normally buy off the net if I'm not in a hurry! Never used a direct download place to buy a game before hence my question!

I've preordered red alert 3 from an online retailer but D2D only have it for a couple quid more. Normally download places seem ridiculously expensive! EA diwnloader for example!

Dunno if it helps or not, but taken from the D2D FAQ:

What about patches, do I need special patches?

In many cases no, you can download the latest patch or in some cases your game downloads it automatically. We also pre-patch your download on our store to the newest version so unlike cdroms, you don’t spend the first half hour downloading patches rather than playing.
