what happens if you run a DirectX 10 card such as a 8800GT on Windows XP with DirectX 9 ?
will you be missing anything ?

Short story no mate, long story yes you wont be able to use direct x 10 features/effects as your using direct x9 your missing nothing really though to be honest.

Its all compatible.

i run my 8800gt on xp64

the 8800gt isn't quite powerful enough to run the games that do support Dx10 at a decent res when using dx10 anyway -Company of Hereos for instance, it flies in dx9 , but chugs a bit on dx10
 
ok thanks, I was thinking of maybe getting 2x 8800 GTs in SLi, seems quite good on tomshardware benchies :)

I'm trying to avoid Vista !
 
Has a single game been released yet where the supposed improved quality/features of DX10 have outweighed the slow-down vs DX9?
I thought the whole point of DX10 was that it was more efficient but eg Crysis seems to indicate the opposite?!
 
Basically the only benefit of DX10 was that it forced the GPU manufacturers to build stream processors instead of dedicated pixel/vertex units, and so we're beginning to see GPGPU programs.

Other than that, it was a waste of time.
